In 1892, the city of Elk Grove began to provide pistols for protection. A pistol holster was first made by a local tailor and was simply an opening in the waistband of pants with straps around the chest to keep it in place. The first organized pistol hunt in Elk Grove took place on October 9th, 1895. Fifty-six individuals participated in this event which saw sixty-eight rounds fired from six shotguns. The event ended with a victory for the city over rival town of Westmont. In 1907, the City Council passed ordinance that allowed handgun carry within CITY limits without a permit or special license. This ordinance became known as “The Pistol Permit Law” and forever changed gunpolitics in Elk Grove. Beginning in 1923, firearm possession by civilians was limited to those who had a Class 3 Firearms License which required an application and review process plus payment of $10 per year. The act also establishedmatters such as permits and licenses being handled through the City Manager’s Office instead of through County Sheriff’s office which at that time oversaw all criminal activity inside of Elk Grove borders
Elk Grove is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Elk Grove Village is north of Chicago on the eastern edge of Cook County and south of Evanston on the western edge. The first humans to settle in what is now Elk Grove Village were Native Americans who called it "Mikwahtanka," meaning "place where you can see deer." In 1836, General James K. Polk appointed Captain Samuel Davenport as surveyor for what would become Elk Grove Township. That year, Captain Davenport discovered land that would later become Elk Grove Village. He named it after his home state of Iowa - Groveland being one of several Iowa towns chartered into Cook County in this way. The first white settlers arrived in 1838 and started building log homes around what are now known as Maple Lawn Drive and Eastern Road (now Elgin Road). In 1847, Colonel John Hennepin organized a force to drive off American Indians who had taken up residence along the Illinois River near present-day Elmhurst and built their own villages downstream – Mokena to the north, Pekin to the east and Clifton Heights to the south – while leaving Elk Grove unorganized Territory subject only to Hennepin's jurisdiction. A few years later an act was passed by Congress authorizing purchase from those Indian occupants by any person owning five hundred acres or more within six miles of any post office in this country; thus all residents within six miles of Elmhurst became potential purchasers without having to go through Hennepin or anyone else first. This legislation helped speed up development westward as hordes of frontier farmers came ashore seeking new land for their herds and families during this period known as "the Great Migration." The first school was organized in 1849 by Reverend George Ripley at what would eventually be known as Old Fort Dearborn Park across from Elmhurst Cemetery. Classes began with just seven students but soon grew into a large community with over 100 students enrolled by 1860 when a new school building was erected on North Western Avenue between Cicero Avenue and Arlington Boulevard; it remains today as South Side High School (formerly Griggs Middle School). The village slowly expanded until there were only two buildings left standing in 1860 when another school was opened on Michigan Avenue between Cicero Avenue and Grand Crossing Boulevard which remained open until 1982 when it closed due to lack Of funding During these early days there wasn't even a name for our village since it consisted mostly of farms stretching out beside Indian Reservation boundaries! Creek Run/Groveland/Evanston did come into use pretty quickly though... We probably got that name because most everyone living near creek runs thought we were close enough to Evanston! But no matter how hard we tried not many people ever went out West so they just started calling us 'Elk' hereabouts! haha

Elk Grove was first settled by the Potawatomi in 1765. The town was named after a grove of trees in the area. In 1809, Elk Grove Township was organized and it became an independent city on November 1,1892. On October 20,1992, Elk Grove merged with DuPage to form the Illinois comity of Cook County.
