Elk Grove is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 47,853 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Cook County and one of the most populous cities in Illinois. Elk Grove was founded by John Cranch in 1847 and was named for him and his family. Elk Grove is located on Chicago's south side within the boundaries of Humboldt Park. The city has a total area of , making it the second-largest city in Illinois after Chicago. Elk Grove is bordered to the west byOak Lawn, to the north by DuPage County, to the east byCook County and to the south by Kane County. The history of Elk Grove dates back to its establishment as a small farming community near what is now Wicker Park on October 21, 1847. John Cranch purchased 160 acres (65 ha) of land from George Washington Herndon for $1 cash plus 20% interest payable annually until paid off with seed money from his shares in Fort Dearborn Plantation which he had bought earlier that year from Herndon's brother-in-law Drury & Co.. Cranch built a log cabin on this site which he named "Elk Grove". He moved his family into this cabin beginning their first permanent residence there on November 4th of that year. In early 1848 he started building additional structures including a barn, addition to house his wife Margaret (née Leary), children Catharine (1849–1914), John A., Anna L., James P., Samuel S., Catherine M., Moses I., Caroline E.(1850–1911)), Eliza J.(1851–1925)) and Sarah T.(1852–1920). This administrative center served as an important commercial center for local farmers between Humboldt Park and Naperville because it had direct access to Lake Michigan through iver surrounding hillsides which made transportation possible during those years when wagon roads were only lightly traveled dirt paths or bridle paths. In 1850 Elmira College opened its doors at what is now Elmira Road/Michigan Avenue in downtown Elmira while also serving as an important educational resource for residents of neighboring towns such as Naperville (to the south) and Wheaton (to the northwest). By 1865 both Elmira College and Naperville Academy were closed due largely to lack of funding however other schools soon followed suit such as Danville Normal School which opened its doors on September 1st 1865 just across Michigan Avenue from where Elmira College once stood; so much so that Naperville High School eventually became known simply as Northwestern Normal School / Grinnell College until it merged with Northwestern University in 1998 creating one large university campus within two separate campuses - one located insidegrinnell college main campus called Northwestern University/Northeastern State University while another located adjacent to grinnell college called Grinnell College / Community Colleges System - all part of larger University system known officially as The Northeastern State Universities / The Northeastern Campus System . The city of Elk Grove, Illinois was founded in 1839 by General Samuel J. Kirkland and his wife, Anna P. Kirkland. The first settlers were Dutch farmers who arrived in the area in 1836. In 1840, the town was named for John Fenton, a general in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1847, the community acquired a post office from Antiochia on theMississippi River. The population of Elk Grove increased rapidly thanks to new irrigation systems and agricultural production. By 1870, it had reached 1,600 residents and had become an important manufacturing center for goods exported to Great Britain and other parts of Europe. In 1912, Elk Grove became part of Chicago metropolitan area and experienced rapid growth as a result of industrialization and urbanization within Chicago’s boundaries. The city continued to grow through World War II as military installations were created throughout Illinois; Elk Grove became one of these locations. After the war ended, Elmhurst took over much of what once been central Elk Grove (although some remains). However, due to continuing suburban development within Elkhorn Heights adjacent to central Elmhurst since then-the-last major waves of farming took place at nearby Batavia Prairie where many families still live today Elk Grove is now home to more than 10K residents who work in its businesses including many small businesses that are not typically found downtown or near mass transit areas like Midway Airport or Navy Pier because they don't want their space taken up by high-rise buildings or commercial development
