Elk Grove, Illinois is a city in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,714 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth largest city in DuPage County and the eighth largest city in Illinois. Elk Grove was named after two large stands of trees near the town's center. The first stand of trees were located on what is now Elm Street and Prospect Avenue and were called "The Oaks." The second stand of trees were located on Farm Road 12 west of Center Street and were called "The Birchwoods." Gun lights first appeared on American shores in 1792 when Captain John Smith used a small fire to shoot an animal he had caught while hunting in Chesapeake Bay. Gun lights quickly spread throughout the colonies during this time as firearms became more common. By 1836, all but 1% of Americans lived within 100 miles of a gunsmith or rifle association where firearms could be bought and exchanged. In 1868, General James K. Polk organized his army's 15th Infantry Regiment under command of Major-General Henry Wirtz at Camp Evans south of Springfield, Illinois using equipment captured from General Winfield Scott's army retreating across Missouri River during the Battle of Perryville. This event is often considered to be one of the beginning moments in American history as a nation when guns began to play an important role in warfare. After fighting several engagements against Confederate forces near Springfield before being withdrawn northward towards Chicago due to lack of support, General Wirtz' brigade encountered about 25 Confederate cavalrymen led by Colonel John Fetterman at Pritchard Ford outside Elk Grove Village on November 27th, 1868 – just weeks before Abraham Lincoln was elected President over Andrew Johnson with help from General Wirtz (the only US general who personally participated in that battle). In what is considered one OF THE most decisive battles ever fought by American troops on land – both sides achieving significant victory – Colonel Fetterman's cavalry managed to prevent any meaningful engagement between Union forces and resulted in some high casualties for both sides including many killed or wounded horses and riders as well as troopers capturing many cannons (see also: Vicksburg Campaign). After that battle General Wirtz ordered his men not to destroy any artillery taken back by Confederate forces which helped preserve these weapons for future military campaigns such as those fought subsequent years against rebels elements operating within Union territory such as Kansas City through West Virginia into Maryland etc… Over time ammunition prices increased militarily making these types of transactions less desirable so much so that Richards & Brown tavern owner Daniel Drake decided Newton Rifle Works Ltd., established August 10th 1871 - would become one Of America’s earliest “gun stores” catering exclusively to NRA members shooting matches out their property adjacent To present day Elmwood Park Drive bearing Richards Arms nameplates still standing today! In 1895 Revolver Company No 2 opened its doors inside what is now Griggs Guns & Ammo store #1005 N Main St./Old Armory Building adjoining Ironton Golf Course/ just east side Of current Elmwood Park Drive off Route 132) following incorporation Of National Rifle Association And later becoming ChamberedRifle Shop Incorporated October 2nd 1912 thru May 7th 1957

In 1868, the community of Elk Grove Village was founded and quickly became a major center for business and culture in Illinois. A number of important landmarks were constructed in Elk Grove during this time including the Elmwood Cemetery, which remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Illinois today.
