Elk Grove is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It was part of the Northwest Side until 1974 when it became a part of the City of Chicago. The population was 26,236 at the 2010 census. The land that would become Elk Grove was first settled by Americans in 1797. In 1836, John Pritzker and his family bought 3,000 acres (1 km2) of what is now Elmhurst from the Winnetka Indians for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). They built a gristmill on their property and named it Pritzker Mill after their father-in-law. A year later they sold the mill to J.P.'s brother-in-law Samuel Merrick for $10 per acre ($160 per hectare). The mill continued to be used until 1925 when it burned down. In 1853, Abram Noyes organized a group of farmers who founded Noyes & Co., which grew into one of Illinois' major grain elevator companies. In 1875, George Adair purchased 1,500 acres (4 km2) of land east of downtown Chicago from Nicholas Fenton for $10 per acre ($160 per hectare). This area would eventually become Elk Grove Village and today's community has a total population over 21,000 people! The first house in what is now Elk Grove Village was built on the site where today's Pritzker Mill stands in 1876 by Charles Burchfield Jr.. By 1888 all houses were destroyed in an fire that swept through this small village located within city limits at that time. "It being Resolved that no person shall build any house or other structure within said Limits without special license from said Mayor and Board thereof; And further That there should be erected upon every lot so licensed a public building twenty feet high and six feet wide bearing such inscription as may be prescribed." From this ordinance sprang forth what are known as "Pritzker Park", "Noyes Park", "Adair Park" and finally "Elk Grove Village". Today these names still hold true with their current boundaries - most notably "Pritzkers Mills" located just south off I-94 near Lake Michigan - but also include several newer homes along Hwy 91/I-294 corridor including “Hawthorne” which replaced former home #313 on Hawthorne Drive adjacent to Lincolnwood Golf Course just north of IL 91 exit 307A (Hwy 91 North) about 8 miles west of Elkhorn Rd./IL 294 exit 309B
