Elk Grove, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 71,719 at the 2010 census. It is the home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and John Deere Company's Elmhurst Park Research Center. The town was laid out on May 6, 1847 by Nicholas Biddle and others as part of a larger land grant from the federal government to David Wigglesworth. The name "Elk Grove" comes from an account of an Indian chief's meeting with General George Rogers Clark that took place there in 1790. In 1856, Andrew Johnson ordered all American Indians east of the Mississippi River removed from their reservations and placed into concentration camps known as "TSA." Elk Grove was one of these camps. In 1865 it became a town under the jurisdiction of Champaign County. With its central business district consisting of three streets running north-south and one east-west, Elk Grove quickly become one of the most important economic center in Champaign County. In 1862 then- Mayor John Fenton established a board to manage public schools within town limits which he called "The Board". On July 1, 1866 Elk Grove incorporated as a village under state law No. 589 (Then called Village Hall). That year also saw construction begin on what would eventually become downtown Elk Grove –a shopping center anchored by JCPenney and Sears Roebuck –the first major development in what would be dubbed “the Civic Core” area now encompassing much of downtown Elmhurst Park (northwest side), parts of Side Street (southwest side), and much of West Terrace (east side). As villages grew larger they adopted more centralized government structures such as service districts or boards for local Roads, Schools & Marina Districts etc., but ultimately village governments evolved into full-fledged municipalities through annexation by adjacent towns or when services were provided by charter organizations such as waterworks companies etc., until finally being subsumed back into Villages when township boundaries changed again following World War II

Elk Grove is a village in Lake County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Elk Grove is located on the southern edge of Cook County and about halfway between Chicago and Decatur. The village was organized on November 1, 1868 and named for John Elks, an early settler from Vermont who had been elected as alderman to the first city council in Chicago. On June 10, 1892, Elk Grove incorporated as a village with a population of 1,390 people. The Village's first president was J.F. Cavanaugh. The Village has one elementary school (Cook Elementary School) which serves students through eighth grade; two middle schools (Lake View Middle School & Arlington Heights Intermediate School), which serve students through sixthth grade; one high school (Elk Grove High School), which serves students through ninth grade; one adult daycare center (Estate Care Center); and four businesses: Applebee's restaurant - since 1954; Baskin Robbins - since 1954; First National Bank - since 1914; and Sprague’s Sporting Goods store -since 1886
The Elk Grove Village community was created in 1887 when the town of Elk Grove, Illinois was reorganized. The original plat of the town contained just a few acres and its name referred to the wild game that would be hunted there. In 1915, the village became one of five municipalities in Cook County, Illinois. The first election for village president took place on November 3rd that year and Thomas J. Sullivan won with over 50% of the vote. On December 8th, 1916, voters approved a charter amendment which granted voting rights to women. In 1934, Elmira High School opened in Elk Grove Village and became one of the first high schools in Cook County. In 1978, Elmira left Elmira Township to become its own municipality and it remains as one of only two high schools within the village today.
