One reason why Elk Grove became especially well-known during this time period was its close proximity to downtown Chicago and its growing number of businesses including banks, insurance companies and other large companies who rented space within walking distance of their customers' workplaces or stores. Elk Grove, Illinois is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. Elk Grove is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered to the north by South Elgin Township and to the east by Lincoln Park Township. The village covers an area of 5 square miles (16 km2). The first European settlers in what is now Elk Grove were French traders who landed on the Fox River in 1762. They named their new land La Salle after Jean-Baptiste Lepage, one of their number. By 1800, there were over 100 Europeans living in what became Elk Grove when it was organized as a town in 1837. The Village of Elk Grove first voted to join the City of Chicago on December 2nd, 1892. On November 4th that year they petitioned for incorporation into Chicago with a population of 1,500 residents. The vote was approved and on January 6th 1893 Elmhurst Avenue was dedicated as Elm Street within downtown Chicago by Mayor John Puskarides. In 1907 construction began on what would become known as "DowntownChicago" – then called "South Side". This project included enlarging Howard Johnson's restaurant onto State Street between Madison and Milwaukee Streets which served as city hall until 1974 when it moved to its current location at Dearborn Street and Michigan Avenue inside McCormick Place shopping center. Elk Grove was founded in 1809 by George Washington as a hunting and fishing ground for the French and Indian War veterans. By 1836, the town had become a village with a population of 350. In 1868, the village was merged into the city of Elmhurst.
