Esk Grove is a small village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Elk Grove was organized on February 15, 1868 from the merger of two other villages: Elmhurst and Prospect Heights. The name "Elk Grove" was chosen to commemorate the large elk herd that once grazed in and around this village. In 1904, Elk Grove became one of several villages designated as a Motion Picture Town by the National Board of Review for its support of motion pictures. In 1935, it became an official town with full city rights under Chicago Mayor James Kelly's "City Beautiful" program. In 1969, during the Vietnam War protests against U.S military involvement in Southeast Asia, some villagers gathered signatures on a petition calling for the removal of Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard from Main Street which ran through their village center into open countryside beyond - an event now known as " peace walk ". The streets leading to Grant Boulevard were renamed after then-President Richard Nixon and first lady Pat Nixon following their inauguration in January 1971; however not all residents followed suit and most reverted to their original names upon passage of legislation allowing for new names within city limits only if they were approved by a vote by City Councilmember (an approval that generally never happened). - Elk Grove has been host to many international events including NATO summit 2006 and G7 meeting 2009; it also served as location for scenes in Spike Lee's film Chi-Raq .

Elk Grove is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Elk Grove was platted on December 12, 1871, by commissioners from Rockford and Belvidere. The name "Elk Grove" comes from a bluff near where the town now stands. The first post office in Elk Grove was established on January 1, 1872. A store and hotel were built in what is now the downtown area of the town and served as its main businesses until 1902. That year, Elm Creek Boulevard (now Kedzie Avenue) was extended east to become Elm Street in what is now Elk Grove Village; this made it easier for people to get around town and led to the growth of that community. When President Ulysses S. Grant visited Rockford on July 4, 1865, he noticed that many people there were gathered around a large fire which they had started in an old mill building on Wabash Avenue adjacent to his home at Fordham University (now Roosevelt University). This milling project had been started by his brother-in-law George Washington Carver two years earlier and it soon became one of Rockford's most important economic assets; when Grant learned about it he ordered all federal mills closed down so that Carver could continue working without interruption. In 1870s Elk Grove also became an important center for agricultural production due to its location at one of the earliest crossroads in the area – Elm Creek Road crossing just south of present day Elmhurst Drive – providing easy access to markets across southern Illinois and Wisconsin as well as points eastward into Michigan Territory (then part of Ohio). In addition to producing hay and oats for local consumption or export, some farmers also grew corn or other vegetables for local market share or sold their produce directly to consumers off truckloads onto Highway 69 near present day Monee Heights Road (the route today known as I-88). Over time various shops opened up along Elm Creek Boulevard including a grocery store/bakery called The Gilded Cage which opened in 1907 followed by J & L Hardware Company which rebranded itself JC Penney after founder James Cornerstone retired in 1957; both stores are still open today with extensive inside retail space used primarily for selling groceries and household items such as mattresses and appliances while still maintaining significant portions of their original design elements dating back more than 60 years! In recent decades much redevelopment has occurred within Downtown Elk Grove with new residences being built atop older buildings while commercial properties have been redeveloped into loft apartments or high-end shopping malls featuring vast amounts of floor space specifically designed for retail sale ONLY! In fact even though much newer residents may be living right next door often times you can't tell because all development activity takes place behind fences protected by security gates! A family owned business located at 5th Street & Western Ave closed up shop abruptly early last decade this left an entire block vacant 3 blocks long !! NO ONE KNOWS WHY !!

In 1872, the city became a railhead for the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1907, Elk Grove became an incorporated town. The population of the city increased from 1,000 to 9,000 during World War II due to the influx of soldiers and their families. After the war, Elk Grove experienced a period of growth and prosperity that lasted until the late 1990s.
