Elk Grove is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,735 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous community in the city of Chicago and it is home to Northwestern University. Ammunition production has been an important part of this community's history for over 200 years. In 1856, John A. Frémont organized a group of men to Purchase land east of Chicago to establish new homesteads in what is now Elk Grove Township. The first ammunition factory opened in Elk Grove in 1872 and produced cartridges for shotguns, rifles and pistols. This factory was joined by two others within a few years and soon there were four factories producing ammunition for all types of firearms. By 1910, there were 19 factories manufacturing ammunition in Elk Grove alone. Ammunition production continued through World War I and into World War II; during those wars, the town became known as "the Arsenal of the Nation". In 1949, when Armour Ammunition Corporation bought Frémont's interest in his company, production moved from Elk Grove to Frémont's new plant on North Avenue near Loop 610th Street in Skokie Heights because that area had more reliable access to raw materials than did neighboring towns such as Elmhurst or Deerfield which were located outside the city limits. Armour Ammo Corporation continued to produce ammunition until its bankruptcy in 1984 and then ownership passed through several hands before finally being sold off to Steelcase Incorporated who continue producing ammo commercially today out of their former plant on Clinton Rd./Wabash Ave., just east of Skokie Heights proper on the north side of Chicago

Today, Elmhurst Hospitality School occupies what were once General Electric buildings on West Addison Street near First National Bank Park - one of America's oldest park-like settings with open space between buildings dating back to 1886. Elk Grove has been home to many famous people including former President Harry S Truman; tennis stars Rivka Safronova and Serena Williams; entrepreneur Jay Leno; author Alice Sebold and actor Kevin Spacey. In recent years, Elmhurst has become known for its annual Elks Open golf tournament which attracts some of the best golfer in the world such as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson
