Elgin, Illinois is a city in Elgin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,693 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in Elgin County after Carbondale. The city was founded by John S. Sears and his family in 1847. The first post office in Elgin was established on April 24, 1847, and was called Mayesville. In 1853 the town of Elmira merged into Elgin and it changed its name to Elgin on December 12, 1898. The current spelling of the city's name is tribute to John S. Sears who donated $100 for the change from "Mayesville" to "Elgin". On February 14, 1893 an act of Congress designated a part of Carbondale asElsin Township which included much of what now makes up the City of Carbondale including most of what is now Elmira Park (later annexed by Carbondale). On November 3 1913 an act passed Congress designation all but 1/2 acres (0 hectare) east and south of Main Street as Northside Parkland being dedicated to parks &open spaces purposes forevermore & ever more& so it has been since then! In 1905 there were only 375 residents in what is now Elgin; by 1920 that number had grown to 634 with 406 businesses organized into five wards: First Ward (northwest), Second Ward (southwest), Third Ward (eastwest), Fourth Ward (southeast), and Fifth Ward (south). On October 25 1912 Wards Two through Four were combined into one ward under new government organization known as “the Union League” while wards One through Five remain separate today under their own government organizations known as “the old Du Bois” or African American Community Development Districts- both with headquarters located inside the present day City Hall Annex building on Main Street between 5th Avenue West and 7th Avenue West! This combination made possible not only increased services for citizens within each ward but also unified resources across all five wards for more effective public service delivery! Today over 90% of businesses within each ward are owned and operated by black entrepreneurs – evidence that integration actually works! There have been many significant events during Mayor Robert J. Maggio's tenure which we would like to highlight here; some include: making downtown open every night from 8pm until 2am during summer months; creating a Park District which includes over 20 miles square (.8 km²) near downtown; initiating large-scale renovations to Midtown Plaza followed by groundbreaking for newly constructed Midtown Library; attracting world-renowned chef Wolfgang Puck to grace our city’s skyline with his popular Chicago restaurant opening soon adjacent thereto; welcoming back displaced Hurricane Katrina evacuees following dayslong standoff with state officials over access to housing – finallymuscling his way onto national news headlines when he announced plans for a brand new high school campus just outside downtown - this momentous announcement helped create momentum for voter approval later that year resulting in construction beginning right away! Elgin, Illinois is a city in Elgin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 34,948 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Elgin County. The city was founded on February 17, 1847 by John A. Elgin and his brother James A. Elgin as a railroad town on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad northwest of downtown Chicago. The original town contained only $1,000 worth of property and no citizens were ever born in it until 1849 when John A. Elgin's sister-in-law brought over her family from Mount Pleasant, Iowa to live in what would become Elgin. The early settlers were farmers who raised corn and wheat crops; some also built log homes or small stores near the railroad terminus to sell goods arriving from Chicago daily. In 1851 Congress passed an act authorizing the construction of a railway through central Illinois to link with other southern railroads; this project became known as the Central Overland Railway Company and was completed in 1853 by John A. Elgin and others under license from Congress. As development progressed in earnest around town started occurring that resulted in new businesses being opened up such as grain mills, saddlesmiths (manufacturing horse brands), grocery stores, doctors' offices (including one operated by Drury & Son which still stands today), churches (mostly Baptist/ Methodist), barsber shops (men's hair styling services) and saloons (liquor). By 1860 there were ten hotels within one block of each other across three blocks east of First Street between Clay Street and State Street while two blocks west along State Street had twenty five hotels within one mile radius including four located on Prairie Avenue between Third Streets South and Fourth Streets North having an aggregate population of 350 people at their peak according to City Directory for 1870 There are numerous stories about how each hotel got its start but typically itinvolved either someone coming up with an idea or getting help from friends or relatives who ran commercial enterprises inside or outside of town during that time period
