Elgin is a city in Elgin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,719 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Elgin County and the second-largest city east of Chicago on the Mississippi River. The first known appearance of what is now Elgin was as an agricultural village called hunter's village on May 10, 1812, by George Rogers Clark during his march across Iowa Territory from Council Bluffs to Springfield. He named it after his father-in-law, Elijah Parish Lovell. On July 4, 1836, when Andrew Johnson became President of the United States and ordered Missouri to be ceded to him as part of that state's admission into the Union, he sent a letter to then Governor James K. Polk ordering that "Elgin" be changed to "Des Moines". Polk complied and put the change into effect on July 6th. However because some people in Elgin were still using "Hunter's Village", they continued to use that name until December 1st when they unanimously voted to adopt "Elgin" as their new name. The origin story for Des Moines began with three men who bought land near present day West Des Moines Avenue and Kinnickinnic Creek on November 3rd 1837: John Atherton (the founder), Ebenezer Morse (the first postmaster), and Moses Chapman (the first physician). They named their new town after Drs. David Noyes and Jonathan Edwards – two American physicians who had been born in Des Moines County but had moved away from there due to persecution by Congress during the Jacksonian period. Noyes later donated land for a public square in Des Moines which still bears his name today; Edwards donated money for another square also located at West Des Moines Avenue and Kinnickinnic Creek where he lived until his death in 1892. In addition, old Dutch settlers built homes hereabouts beginning around 1800 including Jacob Van Dyke who set up a farmstead on Cedar Rapids Road just north of Kinnickinnic Creek before moving westward along I-80 towards Stroudsburg eventually reaching this area in 1793 or 1794 while other pioneer families such as those mentioned above erected homes between 1800/1800 & 1820/1825 including Simon Schlemmer (1789–1858) whose home still stands today at 214 E Washington Street near First National Bank off I-280; Abraham Lincoln’s grandfather Jesse Lincoln residing here from about 1800 through 1825; Solomon Northrup who started farming here about 1830; Robert Hennepin arrived about 1840; David Wells came over next door about 1850 having earlier driven cattle overland from Kentucky via Clearwater Ferry landing on Lake Michigan whence he proceeded southwesterly along Wabash River travelling downriver past Fort Wayne; all these pioneers were followed by others throughout this era many more coming soon thereafter including numerous farmers by means of wagon trains brought overland specifically destined for this area so roundabout etc.,& finally arriving herein “nowhere” variously estimated ranging anywhere from 60K acre lots directly adjoining RR tracks lot size back then only ½ mile wide minimum 2 m width maximum 100 yd long so extremely limited real estate development took place few if any dwellings extant presently not too surprised given geography limitations
