Elgin, Illinois is a small town in the central region of Illinois. The population was 5,753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elgin-Hennepin County metropolitan area. The community is well known for its nationally recognized chocolate production and for its annual corn Maze festival which annually features a variety of events including pumpkin patches and corn dogs. The town was founded in 1836 by John Elgin as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1881, it became an incorporated municipality with a population of 4,000. At that time, it was one of only two communities in Illinois without electric power. In 1984, the city annexed neighboring towns Kankakee and Hinsdale to form Elgin-Kankakee-Hinsdale Township. Elgin's economy has been largely based on chocolate production since it began producing cocoa beans in 1838. Today, 90% of the town's income comes from manufacturing or retail trade services related to those activities alone; some 8% comes from agricultural products such as flour and dairy products. Some other minor sources include services provided by local governments (such as fire protection), professional services (such as engineering) and research organizations (including Northwestern University). Today's downtown areas are primarily business districts, although there are also pockets of residential buildings scattered throughout the community center district near Interstate 55 and State Street. A number of large businesses have closed over time – most notably Mattel Toys & Games – but some smaller companies have continued operations despite difficult times elsewhere in their industry due to strong customer loyalty or geographic advantages within the community itself: For example, Denny's restaurant operates continuously until 10 p.m., even when other restaurants close because they're out of pet food!

Elgin, Illinois is a city in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McHenry County. The city was founded in 1847 by George Armstrong Custer and his brothers-in-law John Matson and James Kedzie. The city acquired its current name from Elgin Creek which flows through it. The first settler in what is now Elgin was George Armstrong Custer who arrived there on July 4th, 1847. He and his two brothers-in-law John Matson and James Kedzie built a log cabin on the east side of Elk Creek where they later renamed their settlement "Elk City". A post office called Elk City was established in 1852, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1857 the community became part of McHenry County when that territory was split off from Kane County. In 1886 the city limits were expanded to include all of what is now north Kane County as well as south Otter Tail counties (which are now part of Stonington). In 1907 Chicagoans Edwin Ladd and Franklin Evans bought land adjacent to present day Elgin and started building a flour mill using water power from Elk Creek. The mill continued operations until 1941 when it caught fire due to an electrical problem. Today only parts of the mill remain standing - including an engine house which has been turned into housing units! The Mill Dam also remainsStanding but has been severely damaged byandals since 2001 In 1951 groundbreakers began construction on what would becomeElsin Drive which ran concurrent with US Highway 20 for about three miles between Elmwood Road/Elk Grove Road & Peltzer Road/Neenah Road before turning northeast onto Elmwood Rd./Peltzer Rd./Neenah Rd., finally terminating just past present day Waterloo Village at State Route 9W/Waterloo Village Rd.. This new development would have included over 150 homes subdivided into streets within walking distance of each other! A second phase of development began around 1960 with the addition of shopping centers, offices, schools & more service roads leading into town center like Elegant Avenue (& today's Old Main Street), Prairie Avenue (& today's Central Ave.), Dutchnaise Boulevard (& today's Delaware Ave.), Bloomingdale Boulevard (&today's Maple Leaf Dr.) & more ! Today most if not all these arterial streets run perpendicular or perpendicular to Elgin Drive providing easy access to everything town center wise ! Downtown business owners continue to enjoy easy access to their customers via these arteries
Elgin was founded in 1809 as a trading post on the Chicago River. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1836, Elgin became the capital of Illinois. The city continued to grow and by 1840 had a population of over 1,000 people. The city was renamed Chicago in 1847 after the United States Congress approved the name change.
