Elgin is a small city located in the Elgin, Illinois area. The population was 1,915 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Elgin County and home to the University of Illinois at Elgin. The town was founded in 1836 by three men, Isaac Baird, Andrew Nelson and Nicholas Campbell. Baird named it after himself, while Nelson and Campbell each took the name of an important friend or family member they knew. The town grew quickly due to its proximity to Carbondale and its location on a major trade route between Chicago and St Louis. In 1839, John Pemberton built the first store in what is now downtown Elgin. In 1845, Abraham Lincoln was elected president of United States; he spent his final months in Illinois before being inaugurated as President on April 6th, 1849. After his inauguration, Lincoln traveled to Springfield to deliver a speech at Ford’s Theatre; he died there two days later from gunshot wounds received in a duel with actor David Wilmot Sr.. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S Grant occupied Elgin after their victory over Confederate General Robert Ewell at Pea Ridge; four years later General Joseph Hooker moved into town from Cairo because of problems with disease epidemics rampant throughout Illinois during that time period (Hooker also served as army commander during this time). In 1915-16 Elgin community service projects were organized by then Mayor Harry Gilmore which helped improve public transportation in town center including construction of new streetscapes around Main Street leading southward from State Street also renovation/remodeling of several blocks east/west on Center Street between First Avenue and Elm Street resulted in improved lighting and ventilation within buildings since those projects had been completed without fanfare back when Gilmore was Mayor
