Elgin, Illinois is a city located in the west central portion of the United States. As of 2010, the population was 24,898. The city was founded by James K. Polk in 1836 as a stop on his transcontinental railroad. The city’s current location and development occurred during the early 19th century when agricultural land was cleared and developed for urban growth. Elgin is one of five cities in Cook County, Illinois that form the Chicago Metropolitan Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Elgin were members of the French voyageur group known as La Salle in 1779. George Washington passed through Elgin on his way from Mount Vernon to Mount Rushmore National Monument in 1801 and recommended that Illinois be created from parts of four British colonies (Newfoundland, Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Georgia). On July 4th, 1836, President James K Polk approved Congress’s resolution creating Cook County from land lying east of Lake Michigan between laSalle Street on the north side and Clybourn Avenue on the south side. At that time there were only three other U.S. cities within Illinois: Springfield (incorporated 1795), Peoria (incorporated 1823), and Danville (incorporated 1847). Elgin quickly grew into a prosperous town due to its location near railroads and its access to markets for goods exported out of Cook County including flour, pork products, tobacco products, lumber products, cheese products etcetera. In 1861-1862 General August Belknap destroyed several buildings used by military officers at Fort Dearborn as part of an attempt to reduce shipping traffic around Point deGrasse Harbor during the American Civil War; this event is commemorated by a statute at Fort Dearborn which reads “Belknap's Bluff” or “Point deGrasse Harbor”He also erected two Gothic Revival style stone buildings – First Baptist Church (1861)and Second Presbyterian Church (1862) – which remain standing today as part of downtown Elgin’s core commercial district

There are also 2 churches: First Presbyterian Church and St. Mary's Catholic Church.
