In 1907, John D'Arcy Whelan founded the first Wheeling Steel Works outside of North America and constructed one of the world's largest open-air steel mills there for producing wrought iron products such as highgirders and crossing rails for railways. Whelan also built several other businesses in Elgin including an insurance agency and a grocery store before his death in 1957 at age 86 years old from leukemia; however, Wheeling Steel Works remain operational to this day as a museum operated by the City of Elgin following their donation to the municipality in 1984). In 1969, Mayor Richard M. Daley appointed George Pritzker as mayor pro tempore due to concerns about potential succession within government should incumbent Joseph Lhota become federal judge instead of running for re-election against then UAW President Bob Dole (Dole would later be elected president).
