Elgin, Illinois is a city of about 60,000 people located in the northwest corner of Cook County. It was founded by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in 1872. The city's first gun magazine was established in 1880. At that time, Elgin had a population of only 10,000 people. By 1908, the population had grown to 100,000 and the magazine became one of the largest in Illinois. In 1916-1917, Elgin hosted the world's first international gun show. In 1957-1958, Elgin became home to America's first indoor target range when it opened at Elmhurst Park. A year later, Elgin began hosting its own annual outdoor rifle match. In 1978-1979, Elgon host its very first air pollution conference when it convened at Union Hall to discuss ways to reduce exposure to harmful pollutants from blast furnaces used by manufacturing companies in neighboring townships

The city of Elgin was founded in 1867 by Nathan Hammonds and his brother-in-law, James McNeely. The brothers started a small grocery store on Elm Street near State Street before moving into the business of manufacturing rifles and shotguns. In 1892, Nathan Hammonds organized what would become the firstgun magazine in Elgin called "The Rifleman". The magazine was initially aimed at farmers but soon became popular among city residents looking for up-to-date information on firearmry. 2 years later, Revolver & Pistol had been established as well and quickly became one of Elgin's most popular publications. Both newspapers were eventually bought by Mayor John Fetterman in 1902 which helped increase circulation both papers significantly. From then until 1923 (when they merged), both newspapers were published weekly except for some weeks when they would be combined into one issue due to budgetary constraints. During this time period, there were several key developments within the firearms industry that influencedpublishers decisions about editorial content: 1) Ammunition production quotas began appearing on ammunition dealers' licenses starting in 1907; 2) Regulation #2 (the National Firearms Act) went into effect November 3rd, 1903; 3) First major handgun buyers convention - Shotgunners Convention - took place January 8th-10th at McCormick Place; 4) NRAILA held its inaugural meeting - now known as NRAILA Annual Meeting & Exhibits - February 6th; 5) First annual International Gun Show opened its doors at McCormick Place on April 13th
Elgin is a village in Elgin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. The village was founded in 1837 by John P. Morton and James W. Hardin as a small community on the east bank of the Sangamon River near what is now Elmhurst University. Morton's family ran the town until it was discontinued when Morton's father died in 1902. On July 14, 1837, General George Armstrong Custer and his Seventh Ulysses S. Grant cavalry unit were attacking Ottoman forces at Fort Hays when they discovered Elgin about three miles upstream from where they were situated; this led to their attack upon Ottoman troops which helped fortify Fort Hays against future attacks by Custer's cavalry unit. In 1875, Fireman Amos Newell set up a small grist mill on abandoned land north of present-day Main Street for grinding corn for local farmers who could not afford to buy flour from more distant mills due to high prices caused by increased demand from people living in cities such as Chicago and other large metropolitan areas during that time period. He continued grinding corn until he sold his mill to Averill Reynolds in 1898 and started using it to make bricks that are still found throughout Elgin today (a process called kiln baking). In 1915 citizens of Elgin raised money through a bake sale to help purchase new equipment needed for firefighting purposes which enabled them to extinguish many fires over the next few years including one that threatened Elmhurst University which had been open only two weeks at the time with no fire protection apparatus available because city funds had not been appropriated for such an endeavor) In 1925 residents desirable tax Increment No.—1 passed through both houses of the Illinois General Assembly setting up a village hall/library complex and authorizing Mayor Edward Jankiewicz (later Cook County Sheriff)to expend $250 per year towards its maintenance and operation until it became fully operational on December 1, 1929 (the first full-time library service in America) . At this time also property located between Elmhurst Avenue and State Street west of current Main Street was purchased by Village trustees for use as a parkland designation rather than development or industrial uses having prevailed there since original purchases .On January 4th 1934 Village trustees voted 3 – 2 to establish an agricultural research station (now known as Purdue University) within elk hunting reserve boundary south of present day State Street just east of elk Hunting Lane
