These two designs became known as “broomhandle” guns because they were able to fire while someone had his broom handle held against his shoulder

Elgin, Illinois is a small town located in Elgin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in Elgin were farmers who arrived around 1836. In 1871, the city of Elgin was formed from parts of townships in Elgin and Kane Counties. In 1907 the city was annexed by Chicago and became one of the five wards in that municipality. On November 3rd, 2002 Elgin voters passed an ordinance annexing the village of Deerfield to the city limits; this annexation increased its population from 1,093 to 2,131 residents. On March 14th, 2009 it was announced that Mayor Tom Barrett would not be running for reelection due to health reasons and would be succeeded by his deputy mayor Rich Fitzgerald as mayor effective May 1st 2009. On July 5th it was announced that former Mayor Rich Fitzgerald would not run for reelection due to health reasons and will be succeeded by his deputy mayor John Stroger effective September 15th 2009
Elgin, Illinois was founded in 1847 by John C. Elgin and his brother David. The city was named after the Elgin Canal which connected Chicago with the Great Lakes region. The canal allowed for easy shipping between the lakes and central Illinois. The city's first mayor was James Gamble and its first recorder was Levi Coffin. In 1855, the city became a U.S. port of entry with passage of the Missouri Compromise which divided America into slavery and free states. As a result of this agreement, Elgin lost its status as a port and declined in population over the next few decades though it did experience some growth in commercially important industries such as shipbuilding, engineering, meatpacking, papermaking and aluminum smelting.
