The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1% of the population. The Census reported that 2,090 people lived in households out of which 382 had children under the age of 18 living with them, 606 unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 35 same-sex married couples or partnerships. Of these 382 households, 34 had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. Effingham, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 927 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Effingham name may come from an Indian word meaning "place where meeting place or encampment is". The first permanent settler in what is now Effingham was Nicholas Negus, who arrived in 1795. He and his family set up a home on the north side of the tracks about two miles east of today's town center. In 1816, John Bryant and his brother James founded a mill on the Wabash River about one mile northwest of present-day Effingham. They named it Bryantville after themselves and their brother James (1763-1837). The mill continued to be run until 1865 by John Davenport & Sons. A post office called Bryantville was established in 1821, but it never served any residents. A grant from George Washington was given to Nicholas Negus in 1800 for 160 acres (6 km²) of land near present-day Effingham village on which he built a house and another for himself and his family. This land became known as "Negus Prairie." As early as 1819, efforts were being made to start a school in this area; however, no schools were ever constructed within effingham boundaries because there wasn't enough territory available for one!
