Effingham, Illinois is a small town in the heart of the agricultural Great Lakes region. The town was founded in 1827 and has been home to a variety of businesses and industries ever since. One of the town's most notable businesses is its scopic business, which specializes in selling telescopes, microscope equipment, and astronomical supplies. The history of Effingham's scopic business is reflective of many communities throughout the Great Lakes region. In particular, the success of this business reflects Effingham's location on one of the richest trading routes in America. This route led to economic growth for Effingham, as well as its ability to support a variety of businesses and industries. The first scopic business in Effingham was founded by three men from New York City: Nicholas Griggs, John Purdy, and Solomon Putnam. The Griggs brothers were responsible for starting what would become one of America's most successful scopic businesses. Their store was located on Main Street in Effingham for over sixty years before it closed in 1971. It is now known as Griggs' East side Store. John Purdy also had an important role in beginning the local industry with his purchase of a sawmill that he used to produce lumber for buildings and other products throughout Effingham. He also became involved with manufacturing telescope parts at his shop until his death in 1907. Solomon Putnam played an even more important role within the development of local industry within effingham than either John Purdy or Nicholas Griggs did. As headmaster at Stonington High School from 1915-1920, Solomon Putnam helped spur educational innovation withinEFFINGHAM while providing resources necessary for students to pursue their passions including science fiction writing and astronomy (Wright). Throughputnam also financed scientific research performed at Illinois Wesleyan University during this time period which helped further develop astronomy into an internationally recognized field (Chernoy). Effingham was founded in 1837 by a man named Ebenezer Butler. The town rapidly grew, and in 1851 the first scopes were erected here. In 1865, Effingham became the capital of Illinois, and in that year it became the first town to establish a public library.

Effingham is located on the southeast side of Chicago and has a gross domestic product (GDP) per capita of $50,728. It is one of the poorest towns in Cook County by GDP ranking and also ranks last out of all villages in terms of median income. The name Effingham comes from an Indian word meaning "place where water floweth." The first settler in what became Effingham was Nicholas Hogg who arrived on May 25, 1814 and named his land after his friend and mentor Sir Walter Scott's home county Scotland - Fife. In 1836 Ebenezer Cooke bought 100 acres near present day Effingham for $5 discount from future surveyors for his farmstead known as "Cooke's Grove". In 1868 David Wainwright purchased 160 acres north-east of town from Ebenezer Cooke – this included most or all of present day Effingham Township including what are now parts of Winthrop, Harvey, Arlington Heights and Streamwood neighborhoods. With its growth into a community during the late 19th century it absorbed several adjacent villages: Arden Park to the east in 1881; Northbrook to the south-west in 1888; Lincolnwoods to the northwest in 1893; Deerfield to the northeast in 1898; Evanston to the westward around 1915. In 1932effingham had 1,500 residents when two new branches were added just outside town limits – Prairie View A&M College & Northwestern University with its main campus opening that same year followed by Stritch Institute Of Technology annexing soon afterwards which raised local asked about reducing commuting time between schools making both campuses more efficient with only one stop on routes). One can still see remnants from these annexations as cooperative housing developments such as Prairie View Village have sprung up around effingham since then aptly called PVPtowne which continue today despite efforts by village officials over recent years to make replacement properties available more cheaply through annexation/rebuilding grants Today effingham continues to struggle economically with high levels unemployment rates (19%) among other problems like low level civic engagement (fewer than 50% voter participation rate), lack thereof cultural resources unique to its community (only three museums within 10 miles), crime rates increase along with diabetes rates due largely to poor diet choices being made by residents away from grocery stores closer to city center

In 1896, Winchester made their own version of the horsebiter scope, which became popular with shooters. In 1902, an American company called Bushnell introduced a hunting scope that used a three-point mount and could magnification up to 28x. In 1907, The Rheinische Sohnsgesellschaft (Rhineland-Westphalia) produced a new type of telescope known as a "Münster" or "Munsterite." This telescope had an eyepiece and objective lens that were both metal construction and adjustable to various focal lengths. It is said that this type of telescope helped pioneer modern long-term photography by allowing someone to take pictures from any angle while viewing them through the eyepiece!
Effingham was one of the most prosperous and populous towns in Illinois during the 1800s. It became known for its manufactures, such as textiles, paper products, and firearms, and its agricultural production. The town is also home to a number of historical sites, including the Effingham Arsenal and the Effingham Depot. The town was founded by Ebenezer Wadleigh in 1814 on the site of an old Indian village. Wadleigh named his new town after his father-in-law, General David Dixon effinghamensis (1761-1825), who had served as a captain in the British army during the American Revolution. The town rapidly grew throughout the 19th century, becoming one of Illinois' most important communities. In 1835, Effingham annexed neighboring Winnetka into its boundaries. In 1871, Effingham City was established within its borders. In 1955, Effingham became a State Fairgrounds city under State law No. 548-55; it continued to be so until 1990 when it reverted back to its original name as part ofeffinghamililandgovt./municipality/city slogan "A Place Where People Come From."
