Effingham is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,836 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Effingham is named for General Samuel P. Ackerman, who served as commander during the American Civil War and later became a senator from Illinois. Effingham was founded by settlers in 1833 and incorporated as a town in 1867. It experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century due to its location on the Mississippi River flood plain and its position as one of eight towns along the railway line that led to Chicago. In 1901, Effingham became an unincorporated community separate fromChicago proper. In 1952, Effingham-Haviland Intermediate School was dedicated on what would have been Ackerman's 178th birthday; he had died two years earlier at age 82 after serving in World War II as an Army lieutenant colonel and Air Force colonel with distinction. In 1994, Effingham's main street was renamed Samuel P. Ackerman Boulevard in his honor. A number of agricultural interests are located withineffingham; these include specialty crops such as corn (maize), soybeans, cottonseed oilseed production, hay products, roses and other plants grown for their flowers or fruits rather than eaten fresh off the field; poultry operations including egg production; retail services catering to local needs including fabric stores and hardware dealers;and several manufacturing enterprises involved in textiles (eagertex®, quilting fabrics*, Foley processing machines*, meatpacking machinery*) and plastics (Taco Bell wrappers*)

Effingham, Illinois was settled in 1834 by African Americans. The community is named after General John C. Fremont, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as U.S. Minister to Mexico City. Effingham became a small town of about 1,000 people when it incorporated as a city in 1955. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 1960s and 1970s due to its role as an economic engine for the surrounding rural area. In 1997, Effingham annexed parts of neighboring Round Rock, Texas making it the third largest municipality in Austin County and one of its most populous cities. Effingham has a rich history that began with early pioneers who arrived in this region around 1810. One of the first African American families to live in Effingham was the Barker family which arrived from Georgia around 1835. They built a cabin on what is now Elm Street near Third Avenue and First Street. The Barker family name may be derived from Ebenezer Baptist Church located close by on Elm Street where they worshipped until their church burned down in 1865 (see photo). Another early settler was Isaac Hardy who moved into what is now downtown Effingham around 1840 (see photo). Isaiah Hardy had come west with his brother Ebenezer and others from Georgia during the 1830s via Mississippi River steamboats destined for California but were prevented by Native American hostilities from reaching their destination due to hostility towards black settlers at that time (see photo). Families like these helped contribute significantly to development withineffingham over time; however, integration of African Americans did not take place until well after World War II when many formerly enslaved Africans came northward seeking better opportunities than they had back home in Africa . After years of civil rights struggles throughout Austin County , effingham's current diversity reflects progress made since then – including increased representation of minority groups both inside and outside city limits The following are some notable events or moments associated with effingham through its centuries: - In 1834, General John C Fremont visited Effingham while on his way southward through Texas - In 1897, effingham annexed parts of Round Rock TX making it one of AustinCounty's most populous cities - On July 12th 1915 President Wilson announced plans for America's entry into World War I ; effington participated fully by forming military units called "All-America Volunteers" - On December 8th 1948 Mayor Wylie died suddenly after being elected mayor for only four months - On October 1st 1951 Effington voted to become an independent city once again becoming one of AustinCounty’s more vibrant municipalities
