Effingham is a small town in Effingham County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1857 by Methodist missionaries. The first post office in Effingham opened on December 3, 1857. The name of the town was changed to Holsterville in 1865 because of local opposition to it being called "Holsterville". In 1875, the first telephone line went into service and as a result Holsterville became one of the first towns in Illinois to have its own television station, WTTW (channel 2). In 1919, Holsterville became home to A&P grocery store which served as the forerunner of what is now Walmart. This event helped spur development in nearby Peoria and other neighboring towns that followed suit with their own A&P stores over time. In 1986, Effingham celebrated its centennial with a parade and rally sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and also featured numerous community events including a carnival and picnic. Today, Effingham retains much of its former agricultural character with fruit trees growing throughout central square; holstersmithing still remains an important part of many residents' lives as they produce their own firearms for personal use or sale; while retail businesses continue to occupy some buildings within central square - most notably Regal Ammo & Firearms which has been family-owned since 1978 - larger businesses have migrated away from central square towardslying streets such as Archer Road and Walnut Street. Nevertheless, effingham's thriving economy continues to be driven by its residents who specialize in agriculture/farming/guns/parades/festivals etc., all while preserving downtown core values such as pedestrian accessibility and sustainability

Effingham is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Effingham was founded by John Wesley Hardin in 1819 as a small town named after him on a tract of land east of present-day Chicago. The name "Effingham" means "place where woods and meadows meet." In 1842, Hardin donated all of his remaining rights to the town so that it could be incorporated as a village under the name "Effingham." In 1847, Effingham became the first village in Hancock County to have its own government with an elected Mayor and Town Clerk who also served as tax collector and street commissioner. In 1865, Effingham's first school was built and operated by Mrs. Clementson (the wife of Ebenezer Clementson). The first high school in Effingham opened in 1870 when Pembroke School District No. 1 merged into Hancock County educational facilities being run by Mrs. Clementson & her daughter Lavinia Epps-Lamarck for one year until newbuildings could be constructed which included a high school building for Effingham schools which opened September 3rd 1870 with Mr. Wm Hinton Superintendent
