Effingham, Illinois is located in the northwest corner of the state of Illinois and is bordered by Wabash River on the east, Lake Michigan on the north, and Indiana on the west. The city was founded in 1834 by Isaac Asahel Dunham and it became a county seat in 1856. Effingham has a population of approximately 93,000 people as of 2010. The city was once known for its agricultural production, but this has now been replaced by its renowned commercial districts.

The history of Effingham, Illinois begins with the Native Americans who inhabited this area for centuries. The first Europeans to arrive in the area were French traders and missionaries in the late 1700s. After a few years, these people left and replaced by British colonists in 1779. At that point, English culture began to take hold and more guns were imported from England. This led to an increase in crime in the area, which caused many people to arm themselves against possible thieves and raiders. In 1815, Effingham was organized as a town under the jurisdiction of Galesburg. In 1838, it became a city when it was incorporated as part of Chicago. In 1871, it annexed neighboring villages of West Side (now Humboldt) and South Side (now Oak Park). The population reached 100,000 by 1890. However, during World War I Effingham was closed off from the rest of Chicago because its military base was located there. In 1924, Effingham merged with nearby towns of Arlington Heights and Streamwood into one municipality called “Effingham-Arlington Heights” which remains today as one of Chicago’s most diverse communities. Over time gun violence has decreased while other aspects such as economy have grown significantly within the municipality; meaning that gun crime is no longer an issue among its residents

In 1924, local farmers organized what became known as "The Farmers' Association" to promote profitable farming practices that would benefit all members of the community. This led to increased production and helped increase tax revenues for the village over time. In 1957, Effingham merged with neighboring Park Ridge to form what is now Area D Township One School District #1 (PDF). Effingham has seen significant growth over recent decades; its population reached 4,000 by 1990 and 5,076 by 2000. According to 2010 Census data (pdf), nearly two-thirds of residents are employed within local businesses or government services – including about 60% within township government itself! There are also a number of large corporations based locally (e.g., Intel , Wrigley Field). The economy depends heavily on manufacturing - most notably agriculture - but there has been recent progress toward diversifying into other sectors such as information technology and software development

Effingham was founded in 1814 by Reverend John Fenton and his wife, Mrs. Sarah Tilton. They named their settlement after the Battle of Effingham Creek, which occurred in 1812. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s, thanks to its location at the junction of two major wagon trails. In 1826, Effingham became a part of the newly formed county of Illinois. The population reached over 10,000 by 1851. By 1870, Effingham had become a small but thriving city with a population of over 25,000 people. After years of growth and development, the city ceased to exist in 1917 when it was merged into nearby Joliet with other surrounding towns.
