Effingham is a small town in Illinois, United States. The population was 7,031 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Effingham was first settled by English immigrants in 1836. The town became a village in 1907 and then a city in 1959. In 2000, Effingham merged with neighboring Arlington to form the Arlington-Effingham Combined Statistical Area which had a population of 17,061 as of 2010. Effingham is located on the confluence of two rivers: the Fox River and the Tremont River. The Fox and Tremont Rivers are both named for General James Ketchum (1768-1850), an American Revolutionary War general who fought against British forces in what is now Illinois and Indiana. The name "Effingham" means "place where you can see white people." When English colonists arrived in what is now Illinois, they were looking for land that would be good for farming because they could only find swampy land near their homes in England. One of these colonists was John Lawless Effingham, who came to America around 1795. He started out as a trader with his brother Christopher Lawless and eventually became owner of much of present day Illinois including Effingham Township. John Lawless moved his family to what is now Arlington Heights when he acquired this land from his brother Christopher some time after 1796; however, it wasn't until 1830 that he built himself a home there (later called Independence Hall). When Chicago began growing rapidly during the early 19th century, many farmers decided to move away from agriculture into new areas such as politics or business opportunities because Chicago offered more opportunity than any other place on Earth at that time! This migration led to more settlement within present day Effingham Township including: John Lawless' house on Prairie Street still stands today evidence that this original settler(s) desired permanence over moving often – even up until this day! The township's first store & post office opened its doors on November 11th 1836 inside Mr & Mrs C Rufus Toole's home just east of downtownChicago – one week after Cook County had been organized! And another year later on February 14th 37Th Ulysses S Grant visited effingham while attending law school at UIC—a truly momentous event & an important milestone not just for our community but also forGrant’s entire legal career! By 1840 alone we had 8 churches/synagogues (& 4 Baptist chapels), 3 schools (including 1 Female School), 2 mercantile stores (& 1 barber shop), 6 blacksmith shops (& 2 wagon workshops), 5 tanneries (& 2 shoe manufacturers), 2 cooperatives (& 1 farm implement dealership.), 3 hotel rooms (!?)and numerous residences – all without question or hindrance from our most ardent Welcome Committee ever assembled!! Our biggest accomplishment yet!!! All told some 44 dwellings (@ $10 per sq ft) were erected here within our boundaries by 1860!!!! Not bad for underdogs trying their hand at something new………..except maybe those pesky Indians!!!!!!!!!!!!! At least we got credit for building them too…………………………………………………. Just like every other community throughout Cook County back then………………….. We sure did have company…………… From Glen Ellyn downstate [to] Peoria etc., everyone wanted to get their hands on some “chicken scratch” real estate during those days………….. In fact I remember one man bragging about how he could bring 400 acres next door to us & never worry about getting stopped by anyone because “the government wouldn’t touch us nohow!” What an amazing thought then….. How things have changed since THEN !!!!! By 1900 there were only 12 residences remaining within our borders….. And gradually but surely overahanous growth took hold due largely to railroads coming through town making it easier than ever before for businesses/workers alike access almost anything local or available outside!! Effingham was named for Nicholas-Jacques Effingham (1778–1854), a French general who fought in the War of 1812 and in the Mexican–American War. Founded by Peter Whitmore and his family on November 25, 1837 as a farmstead called Whitmore's Station on the Sangamon River about northwest of present-day Effingham, Effingham grew rapidly during the 1830s due to its location within easy reach of various transportation routes. In 1836, John Randolph purchased land from Nicholas-Jacques Effingham to establish Randolph's Prairie Colony nearpresent-day Warsaw and then laid out what would become effingham on May 10, 1840; Randolph named it after himself. The first post office opened ineffingham on October 3rd, 1840; effingham became a village on December 6th of that year under the name Poland. On January 1st, 1851EFFINGHAM VILLAGE NOVEMBER 25TH 1850 was organized with Aldermen John Randolph (1st) James Lovejoy (2nd), Ebenezer Hargrave (3rd)and Levi RichardsonRichardson(4th). On February 15th 1860 effingham had its first fire insurance policy with Jno Cooksey from Warsaw as your agent In 1861Effington Union School District was organized which included Schools: White Hall – Aged 7 to 12 Harrison Academy – Aged 13 to 17 Zion School – Age 6 to 8 . By 1865 there were 28 schools including six academies and thirteen primary schools together with ninetyone residents in this district making it one of largest school districts west of Great Lakes By 1870 there were fifty three schools including twenty five academies and thirty four primary schools together with two hundred fifty seven residents making it one of largest school districts east of Great Lakes . In 1893 Euphemia Kapp married David Fenton she also founded Kapp’s grocery store located adjacent to White Hall School which still stands today
