Effingham is a town in and the county seat of Effingham County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,029 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Polk sent an military force to destroy a railroad crossing near Effingham that had been built by a local man named Isaac Crain while he was superintendent of railways in Cook County. The construction of this road crossroads led to so much traffic that it became necessary to build a second crossing some east of town (the present day intersection of State street and First Avenue). This new bridge allowed more goods to be transported into and out of Effingham than ever before; consequently, development around this intersection grew rapidly. A station on the Chicago & Northwestern Railway was opened at this point in 1849; however, passenger service stopped operations due to financial reasons shortly thereafter. In 1854–55 there was also occasional train service from Decatur Junction northward along what is now I-55; but all services ceased when the routing changed because of advances in transportation technology. The Panic struck America during the Great Depression; however, Effingham refused any government aid which would have put additional strain on its finances. Jedediah Smith arrived here with his wagon train on November 10th 1830 from Nauvoo IL., about fourteen miles south west (or northwest) of effingham village on Illinois Route 1 (now US 20), after leaving Nauvoo under cover from Ulysses S Grant's forces pursuing him across Iowa Territory as part of Grant's Overland Campaigns against Indian Chief Black Hawk – events which are now commemorated annually with a weeklong event known as "Jedediah Smith Day".
