Effingham is a small town in Effingham County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It lies on the south side of the Illinois River and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Effingham was founded in 1814 by Captain James Montgomery and his family as a trading post on the river's edge. In 1837, Effingham became an incorporated town and in 1854 it became a county seat. The first cartridges were made from lead shot and metal balls that were fired from longbows or rifles. Bullets were also fired from pistols until about 1870 when revolvers became common. Bullet production increased with advances in technology beginning with development of breech loading guns in the mid-19th century which allowed for more efficient firing of rounds by means of extractors on the cartridge cases instead of needlessly extracting each round one at a time like earlier handguns did. With these advances came new challenges; bullets had to be able to penetrate armor (the earliest projectiles used paper mache which did not do well), they needed to be delivered quickly enough so that soldiers could fire upon enemy positions before they could reload, and they needed to be less likely to cause collateral damage or injury than earlier projectiles. Bullets continued to play an important role through World War I before largely disappearing during World War II as artillery slugging began displacing them as the primary weapon of choice for infantry combatant armies around the world. However, some effort has been made towards reintroducing bulletry into military contexts since then including various projects aimed at improving accuracy and reducing collateral damage when ammunition is used against targets other than humans such as animals or vehicles

Effingham was founded in 1837 by Daniel and Rachel (Moses) Effingham. The name "Effingham" comes from ancient English place names such as Evesham and Huntingdon which were given to villages near London that had been abandoned because of the ravages of war or plague. In 1839, Daniel effigy was found at the site of what would become Effingham Township on the banks of the Fox River. The first school in Effingham was taught by Mrs. Fenton and her daughter Rebecca on a log cabin lot located northeast corner of present day 3rd Street and Harrison Avenue. On September 1st, 1830 three trustees donated land for a school which became known as Stroud's School District #2 with Mrs Fenton serving as Superintendent until her death in 1840 In 1836, Reverend Averill Cranch donated land east of present day Highway 22 for a Methodist church which became known as First Methodist Church Ebenezer Ebenezer Farmstead . In 1853 Rev Jno Matson purchased an acreage north of present day Hwy 36 to build what would become State Capitol Park . He also donated $1 per acre to help defray costs associated with building this structure Daniel Effingham married Rachel Moses on October 12th 1796 at Zion Chapel where they resided until their move west to build their own home in 1837 Rachel died after giving birth to their only child Emma Mayeffigham on January 26th 1800 while they were living at Salem Hall south side of I-294 just outside Chicago Heights Emma Mayeffigham later married Dr George Washington Carver who raised her two children before she died aged 98 years old in 1978 Karen Carpenter Carver is currently oneof America's longest running professional athletes having won 6 Olympic gold medals along with over 50 championship titles
