For many years it served as a military post on stagecoach routes between Chicago and other settlements in those days. A gristmill was built here in 1827; but it ceased operation about 1850 due to competition from larger mills located elsewhere around Edwardsville. In 1872 an oil well was drilled at what is now known as Well No 1 within sight of town; this stimulated oil production throughout central Illinois for many years thereafter (see History of Oil Production in Illinois). A new brick courthouse was erected here in 1901; it served as both a municipal court house and county jail until 1952 when consolidation of all county courts into one made that building obsolete. A large cotton gin operated here from 1862 until 1917; its product furnished much of the cotton needed for making fabric items such as sheets and pillow cases during that time period (see History of Cotton Ginning in Illinois). The current school district which serves most of eastern Cook County was formed here in 1954 when parts of three previous districts were consolidated into one system following an act by then-Governor George Ryan which merged two adjoining rural districts (which included Edwardsville) into one entity under local control. At present there are more than 20 schools serving students living within 2 miles of either side of downtown Edwardsville—an impressive number considering that only 10% Of Americans live within 5 miles or so of their homes on any given day! In recent years various cultural events have been staged throughout downtown Edwardsville including food festivals, art shows, music concerts etc.; these provide some much-needed community interaction among locals regardless of socioeconomic backgrounds or interests outside their immediate vicinity!
