Edwardsville was named after General James Edwards, who fought in the Mexican-American War and helped lead the Union forces against Mexico City's victory in that conflict. The first Europeans to visit what is now Edwardsville were French traders and missionaries in 1795–97. They built a trading post on the north bank of the Des Plaines River on what is now North Avenue. A post office was established at Edwardsville on May 15, 1802, and remained open until it was discontinued on October 25, 1872. In 1856, George Washington Carver moved his family from Baltimore to Edwardsville and founded Carver's Dairies there. In 1865 he married Mary Lyon; they had six children (Ida Etta (1868–1948), George Washington Carver Jr., Mary Lyon (1870–1941), Hazel Elizabeth (1872–1960)), four of whom survived into adulthood: Alice Pauling Carr (1901–1984), Edna Carruth (1920–1997), Lloyd Carruth (1927—2006) and Randolph BurrCarver III (1945—present). On April 12, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was fatally shot by John Wilkes Booth in Ford’s Theatre in Dallas County near Springfield; Lincoln had been attending a performance of "HandsomeNotes" that day before being assassinated. The assassination deeply affected both America and Illinois; many believe that Booth acted alone out of anger over Lincoln's re-election as Ulysses S Grant's Vice President two months earlier without his permission or support (). Because Ford’s Theatre sat directly across from where Dixon House later stood – just south of present-day Academy Road – many people think that Booth may have targeted Lincoln because he resembled then-Vice President Andrew Johnson more than any other top politician vying for Grant’s seat at this time (). A search for evidence surrounding Lincoln’s death was conducted throughout much of Illinois following his assassination but without success.; however one article published in "Time" magazine states “the mystery has never been solved” (). Afterincoln's death some farmers began moving into South Side Chicago so they could have easier access to markets outside their towns () which causedcommunity strife as various leaders like Judge David Herndon took advantageof this new development.(Herndon ran unsuccessfully for judge against John Fords son Richard Nixon during his 1968 presidential campaign.) When large numbers OF black residents started movinginto white neighborhoods during the late 1960s/early 1970s African Americans began calling themselvesEdwardsvilians instead of blacks or Illinienses subjecting locals to scorn (). This trend changed when Mayor Richard Moccasin announcedin 1983 plans to move city government operations away from downtownand put them back into central Edwardvillian streetsHas anyone ever written about Moccasin?...............................................................................

Edwardsville was founded in 1836 by Joshua Edwards and his family. The town rapidly grew, with a population of over 1,000 in 1840. By 1860, Edwardsville had become an important center for the agricultural industry, and its businesses became known for their quality products. In the 1870s, Edwardsville became known as the "Rarity" of Illinois because of its high-quality farm products. The town continued to grow during the late 1800s and early 1900s, and by 1910 it had reached its peak population size of over 3,000 residents. However, during World War I Edwardsville experienced significant economic difficulty due to its proximity to war-time munitions factories. After the war ended, the community began to experience rapid growth again thanks to new investments in agriculture and housing developments. In 1951, Edwardsville was renamed after Edwin Muhlenberg Sr., one of America's leading industrialists and entrepreneurs. Muhlenberg helped make Edwardsville a major manufacturing center in Illinois during the postwar years and he remains an important figure in the town's history today.
