Edwardsville, Illinois is home to the world's second optical factory, first in the United States. The company was founded by George Edwards in 1887 and became a major player in the industry. In 1924, it merged with General Electric Company to form GEICO. By the late 1990s, GEICO had divested itself of its optical businesses, but continued to produce metal- and plastic-framed glasses and sunglasses under its own name. Today, GEICO continues to make eyeglasses for both men and women. Edwardsville, Illinois was one of the first towns in the United States to adopt electric lights. The town's first electric light company was founded on December 1, 1884 by John Edwards and Charles Fenton. In 1896, the town voted to annex the city of Chicago and this led to a new era of Electric Light industry in Edwardsville. On October 15, 1899, James W. Dixon opened his first store in what is now known as Dixon Plaza mall. This was followed by other stores such as Harry Houdini's Sporting Goods and J.C.'s Clothing Store which helped give Edwardsville its nickname "The Electric City". In 1924-1925, a large power plant was built in Edwardsville and it became one of the most important factors in giving Edgewater a reputation for being an Electrified community. On May 5th, 1951, Edison Electric Illuminating Company (EEI) merged with General Elecining Company (GEC). GEC was then renamed GEICO after merging with American Gas Corporation (AGC) and these three companies controlled almost all electric lighting interests within America at that time. On October 7th 1957, GEICO merged with RCA Victor Radio Corporation (RCA). This created one of America’s largest electrical companies with over $30 billion assets under management at its peak including some of the world’s leading radio manufacturers including RCA Victor Records Inc., Kapp Communications Inc.,and CBS Broadcasting Incorporated
Edwardsville is a small town in Bates County, Illinois, located on the banks of the White River. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Edwardsville is one of two towns in Bates County (the other being Pana) and it straddles the border between Bates County and Winnebago County. The first settlers to Edwardsville were Labadaeus and their families who arrived from Ohio in 1824. They built a cabin on the bluff overlooking the river, which became known as "The Grand Old Lady." In 1827, David Dixon bought land east of The Grand Old Lady and began building a home that would become known as "Dixon's Grove." In 1829, he married Elizabeth Childers and moved his family to Edwardsville. By 1830, he had builtthree more homes: One on North Main Street (now part of Parkview Boulevard), one on South Market Street (now part of State Road 6), and one on West Dearborn Avenue (now part of State Road 5). In 1833, Jeremiah Dunham purchased land south of Dixon's Grove from David Dixon. He built his first house there – now called Dunham House – in 1840. Dunham also started cultivation of corn, beans, potatoes, peas and flour in his fields. He later added cattle to his farmstead and raised hogs for meat; these animals are still kept today at Dunham House. By 1850, most people in Edwardsville had either fled or been forced out by Native American raids into neighboring Winnebago County; only a few hundred remained behind including Jeremiah Dunham who continued to live large with five slaves whose labor helped support him until his death in 1865. His widow continued to run her household until her death by 1870 when all six children were born free into slavery according to an ordinance passed by then-Governor John Altgeld which guaranteed freedom for all black residents within three years after emancipation date. During this time frame many businesses flourished such as Drury Hotel & Restaurant where General James Halleck served as its president from 1870-1875; Masonic Temple where Odd Fellows Lodge No 4 met every week during this time frame; Lumber Yard & Company where local farmers brought their logs downriver for sawing; Eureka Lighthouse where goods were transported upriver during prohibition era; GAS Light Co.; First National Bank - now Rockford Bank - which opened its doors in 1863; Mrs J Fuhrman ran the store while her husband worked at GAS LightCo.; Ziegler grain elevatorwhich sat upon an old coal mine until it burned down circa 1955 causing significant damage to both property & structure ; The decline of agriculture led to increased demand for commodities brought upriver such as lumber during prohibition era due to increasing railroad activity along the white river corridor; however much progress was made without proper planning or Funding during this time period with various businesses opening their doors despite difficult conditions including Farmer Wagon Wheel restaurant which operated successfully spiteof numerous fires over its years Of note also memorable business failures such as Daisy Diner which closed because its owners couldn't get enough customers coming through town during Prohibition Era & Dooley’s Barbecue Shop which failed because no one wanted pork products available during that time

However, this did not stop engineers from continuing to develop new methods and products for optical equipment throughout the years; some notable examples include modern holography and 3D printing technology.

It is the county seat of Edwards County and the home of the University of Illinois at Edwardsville. The city was founded in 1848 by surveyors named George Washington Edwards and his brother-in-law James Fenton as a post office on land donated by John Smith. In 1853, Abraham Lincoln passed through Edwardsville while traveling to Cairo, Egypt, and encountered local citizens who informed him that there were no banks in town and he should not expect any since he would be returning soon. Lincoln ordered one of his men to open a bank account for him so that he could purchase goods for his upcoming trip. After returning from his trip, he announced that the town had been renamed "Edwardsville" in honor of him and funded its initial expenses with $3 worth of currency earned from selling goods he bought in Cairo. The first store opened in what is now downtown Edwardsville on October 15th, 1854. From this day forward until World War II when it became an military base during the war years it served as a major trading center for materials needed by both sides in their campaigns. The University of Illinois at Edwardsville (UIED) was founded here on October 15th, 1904 as part of the new state university system created by President William McKinley following his inauguration on January 20th, 1901. UIED absorbed other universities located within or near Chicago such as Northwestern University (now Northwestern Memorial Hospital), Urbana Teachers College (now UIUC), and Adams State Normal School (now Southern Illinois University Carbondale). Upon opening its doors to students enrollment exceeded 2,000! Today UIED enrolls over 30 thousand students including undergraduate/ graduate degrees from more than 200 institutions worldwide!
