Edwardsville is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Edwardsville was founded in 1847 by General John C. Edwards and his brother-in-law, George Armstrong Clark. It became an agricultural community that developed into a small town with a population of around 10,000 people by 1910. The first tools made in Edwardsville were axes and hoes. A sawmill was built in 1853 and soon began to produce lumber for the local mills. The town also became known for its cheese production which reached national acclaim in the early 20th century. Cheese has been produced here since at least 1840 AD according to one source and it is now one of the most important food products in Illinois and parts of Indiana. Edwardsville is located on the south side of Chicago and is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Elgin (CNE) metropolitan area. The town began as a small farming village in 1836 and became a city in 1853 when it amalgamated with other towns in what was then the Northwest Side of Chicago. The city boundaries were changed numerous times until they included most of today's Northwestern suburbs and all but one block of what is now Downtown Edwardsville. Edwardsville experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century due to its location near transportation hubs and its close proximity to manufacturing plants such as Armour typewriters, Singer Sewing Machines, chewing gum and candy manufacturers, among others. In 1915, Edison Electric Illuminating Company founded a works here that produced high-voltage electricity for lighting up downtown Chicago; this led to Edwardsville becoming one of America's leading electric cities. The city continued to grow through World War II as industrial production shifted from agriculture to mass manufacture. The war also brought increased attention to food safety issues that were exacerbated by wartime rationing policies. The Edwardsville School District was formed in 1951 and has served the community since then; it operates more than 200 schools across Cook County including several elementary schools serving inner-city neighborhoods adjacent to Edwardsville proper.
