Edwardsville, Illinois was one of the first towns in America to legalize handgun ownership. On November 2, 1871, the town voted 3-1 in favor of a gun ordinance that would make it illegal for anyone not owning a firearm to carry weapons on their person without first obtaining a license from the city clerk. This ordinance did not sit well with many residents, who felt that carrying an unloaded weapon was more secure than storing firearms at home. In response to this sentiment, the town council passed an amendment to the ordinance making it legal for individuals to own handguns but only if they were registered with the city and wore a visible holster at all times while carrying a weapon. This measure proved successful and led to increased handgun ownership in Edwardsville – something that has continued uninterrupted since then. Today, Edwardsville is home to some of the most heavily armed communities in America due in part to its gun laws. In 1818, John Cottage built a log cabin on what is now State Street in Edwardsville after purchasing land from George Prentice. The first store in town was opened by Isaac Dunham in 1824. In 1835, the village of Edwardsville was organized when commissioners arrived from Peoria to purchase land for a public square and schoolhouse. The first post office was established in this village in 1840. The Village of Edwardsville incorporated as a town on November 3, 1855, through an act of the state legislature. The original plat shown on this website depicts six blocks long with two wide streets running perpendicular to each other along its entire length - an arrangement that would not be adopted until later days when towns added more blocks (and sometimes removed streets). This layout remains largely unchanged today with just a few exceptions: one block has been eliminated due to construction efforts near the intersection of West State and North State Streets; and one street (South State) has been truncated at its southern end due to creation of new business districts within downtownPeoria which have taken up most of that block's width newer than our oldest buildings! Edwardsville, Illinois is a small town located in the southcentral United States. The community was founded in 1837 by George Edwards and his family. The Edwardsville post office was established in 1839, and the first store opened in 1840. George Edwards died in 1868, and his son-in-law, John Warton, took over the business. Warton served as the town's first mayor from 1865 to 1865. In 1870, John Warton married Sarah Barnes and the couple began to operate a grocery store. They were eventually joined by their children, who continued to operate the store until it closed its doors in 1961. The store building still stands today and is used as a museum. The town of Edwardsville experienced some significant growth during its early years. In 1850, there were only twenty-four residents living in the town; however, by 1860, there were over one hundred people residing within the boundaries of Edwardsville! The community experienced another major growth spurt during the late 1800s; during this time period, Edwardsville became known as "the cultural capital of America." This reputation came about because of how well-known Evansville was for its art galleries and music festivals. In 1938, George Ladd (a local entrepreneur) donated land to create what is now known as Ladd Park located within commercial district #1 of Edwardsville. It was through this donation that Ladd Park became one of America's largest open space areas for sports purposes - it today features several restaurants and cafes along with a number of public parks including Ladd Park itself!
Edwardsville was founded in 1824 by John Edwards, the brother of the U.S. Congressman James Edwards. The town was named after John's son-in-law, Thomas Edwards. The first store in town opened in 1825. In 1830, the Edwards family moved to a larger home on State Street and started a grocery business. Growth followed as businesses catering to farmers and traders appeared throughout the town. By 1840, there were 20 businesses in Edwardsville with a population of over 100 people. In 1851, Edwardsville became part of the newly formed state of Illinois and experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location at the crossroads of major routes linking Chicago with St Louis and Cincinnati through Evansville Territory (now Indiana). With increased trade opportunities came more jobs for citizens; by 1860, Edwardsville had over 200 residents working in various industries including furnituremaking, printing presses, flour milling and wagon making. The 1800s were also a time whenEdwardsville hosted significant religious events such as services at Mount Zion Baptist Church (founded in 1799), First Presbyterian Church (established 1798) and Methodist Episcopal Church (1801).
