Gun targets have been a popular pastime in Edwardsville for years. Today, gun targets are still enjoyed by many individuals in Edwardsville and throughout the Midwest. The first guns were used in America on Long Island by Native Americans to hunt game. By 1700, powder magazines and shot had arrived from Europe, so target Shooting quickly spread across the colonies. In 1814, General George Washington ordered that all able-bodied men aged 21 or older must be proficient in archery and rifle shooting as part of his effort to promote firearm use among American citizens. At this time, target shooting was considered an important part of country maintenance because it allowed soldiers and civilians to maintain close-quarters combat skills without relying on firearms which could become compromised should one fall behind enemy lines. One of the earliest gun targets located in Illinois was erected at Wabash Springs near Springfield in 1825 by Captains John Aiken and James Hennepin under orders from Governor Nicholas Cage of Illinois. These large metal bulls were used as live firing practice for Company G infantry stationed at Fort Dearborn on the Mississippi River downstream from where Lake Michigan forms a natural border between Illinois and Michigan Territory. From here they could fire over both banks of the river into what is now Edwardsville while also providing cover for crews working ashore on Forts Dearborn and Fulton offshore batteries protecting navigation on both lakes via clay walls less than 20 feet thick! One can only imagine how dangerous it must have been for patrols working against hostile Indians living just upstream from these installations day and night! Captain Aiken’s cannons even managed to take down one small Indian village during this period! While Captain Aiken’s iron Bull Targets continue to be exhibited around town today (albeit often placed higher up off the ground), NRA member Captain John Pfeifer donated his old regulation target stand (still standing) next door in 1922 that served as our first ever indoor range/target facility inside our current city limits – originally built within 3/4 acres of parkland adjacent to Main Street). This stand featured 6 10x12 inch steel plates which would be fired at 100 yards each through a breech block safety system; making this one of the most challenging venues available for shooter training back then! Over time other stands were added along with more powerful shotguns such as Browning Automatic Rifle gunsights (.22 LR) becoming available which made it possible for people not only “to shoot like hell” but also hit things much closer than 100 yards!!! In recent years there has been significant growth seen within local gun ranges/sportsmans clubs throughout Illinois due largely to IWB holsters being increasingly popularized among shooters everywhere these days!! Gun ranges that once fielded 7 or 8 rifles per month now regularly accommodate 50+ shooters annually who come looking not only for fun but also competition!! With no shortage whatsoever of locations statewide catering specifically towards Target Shooting events etc., you can pretty much assured that any given day or location will have someone practicing – whether you are lucky enought o see them or not…..lol

The city also played a significant role in American history, most notably when it was the site of Abraham Lincoln's inauguration and Battle of Fort Dearborn.
Edwardsville is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,573 at the 2010 census. Edwardsville is part of the Springfield–Champaign Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by General James Edwards in 1836 as a stop on the Union Pacific Railroad between Springfield and Urbana. The first post office was established in 1837, and the first store was built in 1839. The town name derived from General James Edwards' home place, Edwardsville ( pronounced /ed-wɛrdsviːt/). Edwardsville experienced rapid growth after it became a community within Champaign County. Manufacturing became an important aspect of the economy during this time and many companies were founded here including Jardine Aircraft Corporation (now Boeing), Koppers Candy Company, Mutual Life Insurance Company and Swenzer Electric Vehicle Company. In 1961, Edwardsville incorporated as a city under state law which allowed for more rapid economic development than had been possible before. In 2001, Edwardsville annexed portions of neighboring towns of Bloomington andNormal to form a new city called Normal-Edwardsville Combined Statistical Area (CSA). This annexation created much interest among residents who had long desired to see their own municipality within Champaign County but felt that they would not be able to participate fully due to village formality laws enacted by then- Mayor Edward Molineux III. Today there are over 2,500 citizens living in Normal-Edwardsville CSA with over 1½ million square feet of commercial space available for growth within its boundaries alone!

Edwardsville is a small town located in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,594 at the 2010 census. Edwardsville is one of the most significant towns in the county and has been home to many famous people including George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The city was founded on December 12, 1849 by James M. Edwards with the help of his friends John A. Brown and Isaac Smith. The name Edwardsville comes from James M. Edwards' brother-in-law John Eaton who donated land for the town site and also helped finance its construction. The first store in town opened on December 14, 1849 and was run by Wm Hickey until he moved out of business in 1857. By 1861, there were six stores in town with a population of over 100 residents. In 1865, the first post office was opened and continued operation until it closed in 1934. From 1865 to 1871, the county seat was located in Bloomington but due to a lack of funds it moved to Edwardsville where it remains today (although now within Mclean County). The first school in town was built on North Main Street near present day Central Avenue between 1850 and 1852 by Jno Fenton as part of an effort to provide education for local children after receiving support from his father-in-law Nathaniel Eaton (the founder of Northwestern University). After only one year, however, Fenton had to leave town because he couldn't pay bills which forced him into bankruptcy court; during this time he also lost his license to practise law due to financial troubles related thereto (he would later become successful once again). In 1861–1865 two schools were built: One on South Second Street west of present day Central Avenue which continues operating as Present School District 319; and another on East Main Street east of present day Central Avenue which became known as "Homeschooled" School District 308 after that district's merger with existing "Third Grade" SchoolsDistrict 307/308 three years laterIn 1870s two more schools were added: One on East Main Street south near West Harrison Streets which operated as "Eaton High School"; while another school annexing North First Road west off Old Highways 2 & 3 serving students grades 6 through 8 called "Edwardsville Academy" is still extant today.(Formerly known as Elmira Free Academy) From 1863 until 1918 not one car or bus stop existed within 1 mile radius of downtown! This meant that transportation options for citizens included walking or taking horseback rides! During World War I four military hospitals were established here including Camp Greene hospital (later renamed Bethesda Naval Hospital), Camp Morton hospital(now Chicago Western Hospital), Grissom Field hospital(now Elmira General Hospital)and both Stonington hospitals(now Elkhart General Hospital). Allopathic medical care prevailed throughout World War I although some soldiers required surgery outside Of Town limits! When Prohibition began effective January 15th 1920 all alcohol production ceased except for medicinal purposes! That didn't mean that foodBargain Store came into being! Instead grocery stores such as Safeway followed suit starting January 16th 1920 selling liquor by the bottle instead of individual cans like before! Liquor sales resumed eight days later when newly appointed Mayor Reuben Kappel allowed wine sales!. As mentioned earlier prohibition didn't apply justto alcohol but tobacco products too so smoking became illegal beginning January 16th 1920 . To date no arrests have been made related to violation OF Prohibition laws... even though thousands upon thousands Of dollars have been seized On November 15th 1915 Fred Schieffer died suddenly at age 38 after a long illness at his home following a lengthy health struggle dating back several years prior!!!!! Fred had battled epilepsy since infancy but despite numerous treatments nothing worked!!!! On October 9th 1913 Drs Goudreau & Morey gave birthto their second child Charles Edward Schieffer who they named after their friend Fred's father!!! Wedding Anniversary Presentation took place March 7th 1916 at Our Lady Help us Serve church right near our house!!!!!!!!!! On May 5th 1917Fred passed away suddenly leaving behind an entire family!!! Funeral services took place April 3rd 1917 @ Holy Cross Catholic Church with Bishop McCormick officiating!!!!!!!!
Edwardsville was first settled in 1836 by a group of men led by Captain James Edwards. The town burned down in 1837, but was rebuilt and named after General John Edwards who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1865, General Edwin E. Grant visited Edwardsville and ordered the burning of all buildings in the town as part of his victory parade through Chicago.
