The city was named for John W. Edwards Sr., who donated land to the town. Edwardsville is a small town in Page County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,831 at the 2010 census. Edwardsville is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Edwardsville Historic District is a national historic district with notable buildings in the town center and surrounding areas. Edwardsville was founded by General James Wilkinson on December 17, 1809 as a sawmill settlement west of Sangamon River. He named it after his father-in-law, Edmunds Wilkinson (1775–1846), who had come overland from Virginia in 1805 to help build the Indiana Territory's first courthouse and other public works. In 1812, Wilkinson married Anna Maria Childers and moved to Edwardsville; he died there two years later. His widow continued to live there until her death in 1825. The first store opened in Edwardsville on May 12, 1830 by Elisha Phelps & Company; it was operated by Wm Halsey for four years before being taken over by George Pollock & Co., which operated it for thirty-eight years until 1870 when it closed down due to financial problems. The town began to grow rapidly during the 1840s as farmers developed new land around the sawmill site and started sending their children to school; between 1850 and 1860, there were more than fifty schools in Edwardsville alone. By 1870, however, many of the older structures had been replaced by newer stores and homes; only one building from before 1830 remained standing within the historical district boundaries then existing. During this time period also important events occurred that have left lasting effects on Edwardsville: First on December 7th of that year an Act of Congress created Page County out of much larger territory east of Sangamon River which included most of present day Kane County; secondly on February 11th 1865 Abraham Lincoln was elected President of America following his victory over John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theatre in Washington D C – this event has been called “the great political event that shook America” because it led directly to Reconstruction efforts across Illinois which eventually led to blacks becoming fully integrated into American society – these movements helped create what is now known as "Edwardsvilian" culture here in central Illinois Finally in 1896 Edwin Saylor established Saylor Electric Railway serving businesses along Sangamon River eastward from downtown towards what is now Park Ridge

The first store in town was built on the corner of Third and State Streets. In 1851, Edwardsville became an inch-square community with a population of about sixty. By 1865, the population had increased to three hundred and ninety-eight. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Edwardsville became known as a center for heavy industry due to its location at the junction of two major railroad lines. However, during World War II, Edwardsville lost its status as a manufacturing center due to its lack of military production capabilities. Today, Edwardsville is home to several small businesses and a few dozen residents.
