Edwardsville is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,236 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Edwardsville is located on the south side of Chicago and straddles the border of Edwards Park on its west side and Lincoln Park on its east side. The city began as a farming community developed around the junction of two streams, White River and Elm Creek. A post office was established in 1872, and by 1884 there were 145 residents in Edwardsville. The first store was built in 1888 at what is now Sixty-fifth Street and State Road 704. In 1902, an act to create a new township was approved by the Illinois General Assembly; Edwardsville became an unincorporated community within Cook County. In 1916, there were 1,500 people living in Edwardsville; by 1920 it had grown to 3,000 residents. During World War I (1914-18), Edwardsville served as an important training ground for military personnel from both Great Britain and America; during World War II (1939-1945), it played a significant role in providing munitions for the war effort. In 1951, when Cook County merged with DuPage County to form that county’s second largest region (after Chicagoland), Edwardsville remained within DuPage County but lost much of its commercial center including most of its churches which closed after merging with other surrounding townships into larger units such as Arlington Heights or Wheaton. In 1984–1985 local officials decided that no more businesses would be developed within walking distance of public schools so that more people could live close to work while still having access to quality education opportunities outside their homes – this decision led to growth for retail businesses along newly created streets near public libraries throughout downtown Edwardsville which continues today with several high end shopping precincts located just off city limits near some big box stores like Sears/Kmart/JCPenney
