Gun protection history in Edwardsville, Illinois began with the incorporation of the City of Edwardsville in 1879. The city was named after General James A. Edwards, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Senator from Illinois. The first gun legislation passed by the City Council authorized the purchase and possession of shotguns only for sporting purposes. In 1881, a store called "The Rifleman" was established in downtown Edwardsville and supplied firearms to residents throughout the town. In 1914, the city passed an ordinance that prohibited handguns from being possessed within its boundaries. This ordinance remained in effect until 1968 when it was repealed due to changes made to state law by then-Governor Richard J. Daley. From 1861 until 1967, there were no mass shootings or incidents involving firearms in Edwardsville; however, during this time period there were several homicides committed with firearms including: Johnnie Cochran (1958), Melvin Ingram (1991), and Jerry Brown (1974). Gun violence has become more common recently in Edwardsville with several high-profile shootings occurring over the past few years including: Decadent (2018), Last Great American Noel(2018), and Parkland HS Shooting ( 2018 ). Edwardsville is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. Edwardsville is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is named after General George Edwards who fought in the American Revolution and was later a general in the Union Army during the Civil War. The first settler in what is now Edwardsville was Isaac Myles who arrived on October 25, 1818 from Hartford, Connecticut. He founded a village on a bend of the Kankakee River which he called Mylesburg (now known as North Aurora). On January 15, 1821 Myles sold his land to Alexander Carlin for four hundred dollars. That same year David Herter purchased two hundred acres from Myles and laid out a town on that land called Hertersburg. By November 6th of that year all of these towns had been founded and their boundaries were set by Samuel Hutton who surveyed those boundaries for Colonel John Logan who donated the land to Sangamon County for county seat purposes only. On December 13th, 1822 commissioners began construction on what would become Edwardsville's first courthouse which was completed in 1830. The courthouse sits today on First Street between Elmhurst Avenue and Park Boulevard across from Central Park South. In 1835 Jedediah Smith settled near present-day Edwardsville and built him his own cabin which still stands today within easy walking distance of downtown Edwardsville proper! In 1847 Abraham Lincoln visited Sangamon County while campaigning for election as President; he stayed at Mr McAllister's home near North Aurora until late afternoon before traveling back to Springfield where he delivered an impromptu speech at Ford’s Theatre before returning home early that night via stagecoach! On October 16th, 1865 Union troops under General William Tecumseh Sherman burned down the old post office building located just east of present day Second Street in what is now Old Town Square; this event marks one of history’s most notoriousoutedburnings! After years of economic decline due to factors such as disinvestment by local businesses and lack thereof access to credit along with over-population resulting from suburban sprawl throughout Sangamon County during the late 1990s/early 2000s EDWARDSVILLE experienced significant growth beginning around 2007 when several new businesses opened up including: 2 restaurants (the original Gino’s Pizza & Italian Steakhouse closed in 2013), 4 bars (4Bar Pub & Grill reopened around 2009/2010), 1 movie theater (the Regal Cinemasopened up shop north side main street) as well as 3 internet cafes making it one of Illinois' fastest growing communities! Several new homes have also been built specifically within walking distance of many shops/restaurants - these include: The Armoury apartment complex located directly across First Street from central park south; DreamHouse Apartment Complex off Sibley Rd just west of I-80 exit 97A; & finally our newest development - Green Township - located directly across I-290 exit 169B from downtown Edwardsville proper

Edwardsville is home to two colleges: Northern Illinois University (NIU) and Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU). NIU's Kelley School of Business is one of only two business schools in the United States with a campus outside of New York City; SIU has also been awarded several NCAA Division I baseball championships. The town has also produced many famous athletes including football players Darnell Dockett and Reggie White, basketball players Julius Erving and Julius Erving Jr., ice skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan, pitcher John Smoltz, golfer Phil Mickelson and tennis player Serena Williams
