The Edwardsville-Naperville Metropolitan Statistical Area has a total population of 1,883,711 as of July 2017. The Edwardsville area was settled in 1836 by John Edwards and his family after they arrived in this area from Kentucky through Illinois on their way to California. They named their new town after General James Edwards who had been killed in battle earlier that year. The first post office was established in 1837 and continued operation until 1853. When the railroad reached Edwardsville in 1857, it quickly became an important transportation hub for farmers and local residents traveling between Chicago and other parts of Illinois or Indiana. By 1860, when the Union Pacific Railroad reached Edwardsville, it had become one of its most important stations with over 100 trains passing through it daily. After Abraham Lincoln’s victory over Confederate General Robert Ewell at Peoria on November 8th 1863, much excitement developed throughout America due to Lincoln’s new presidency which included plans for significant reform within the military including increasing troop numbers for American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) which were then being sent into Europe to fight against Napoleon III’s France during World War I. With increased need for goods brought up from downstate during this time period and good prices available at nearby rail yards such as Chicago &Milwaukee Junction Railway Company Yard (now part of Metra), many farmers began moving away from central IL into what is now suburban Cook County starting around 1870-1880 due to these good economic times along with efforts by Edwin Mosely (a prominent lawyer who later served as Mayor of Chicago) to establish an agricultural college near downtownChicago under his leadership known then as “Moses Lake Agricultural College” which would eventually become “Ulysses S Grant Presidential University” today located just south of MidtownChicago off Roosevelt Road close to Metro Center shopping center). In 1882 when Edison invented his light bulb we can say that electricity started reaching people all over Illinois via railways! Before Edison came along there were only kerosene lamps that could be used sparingly because you needed a lighter(or match)to ignite them! When he created those little bulbs we suddenly had countless options for lighting our homes without leaving home! This led directly into how everyone now uses Electricity nowadays whether it be turning on lights at night or using air conditioning or even trying not use any lightbulbs at all if you have an LED light!) In 1886 when he founded Western Electric Company we suddenly had a whole bunch more products that could be produced thanks primarily to advances in technology like plastics(which allowed us pour things like car hoods etc.) Those days are long gone but some amazing moments happened during those years such as Westinghouse becoming America's first nuclear power plant(later renamed URS Corporation) back before anyone even knew what Atomic Energy was!! And finally most recently there has been so much progress made with Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence/Big Data etc...that no single person can really know everything about every single thing haha! So here we are again living productively albeit somewhat differently than when John Edward's family settled here nearly 200 years ago ;)
