Edwardsville, Illinois is a town located in McLean County, Illinois. It was founded in 1871 by John Edwards and his family. The town became an incorporated village in 1901. In 1968, the village merged with the town to form Edwardsville Township. The township was dissolved in 1998 and its assets were divided among the remaining townships. The first gun that was ever made in Edwardsville was a 12-gauge shotgun called the "Patriots". The shotguns were manufactured by Isaac Aspinwall of La Grange, Illinois. He also produced pistols and rifles for settlers to use during the American Civil War. The guns were used by farmers to hunt game and protect their homes from raiding parties of Confederate soldiers. In 1872, John Edwards began making rifles for sale to civilians. His company name at that time was "John E." & Sons Rifle Works Ltd.). In 1897, he sold his company all his firearms except shotguns to Ira Davenport of LaGrange, Illinois for $2,500 cash (this transaction is documented as being on December 2nd). This purchase marked the beginning of what would become one of America's most successful rifle manufacturers - Ira Davenport would remain a part-owner of JEDW until it went bankrupt in 1903*. In 1863-64, when Edwardsville was added to Park Ridge Township, it became one of six townships formed within that township (the others being Elmhurst, Galesburg Heights, Hoboken Village, Arlington Heights/Langston Hills/Shawshank Center Township), all served by one Supervisorial district headed by a supervisor elected at large from each township plus two representatives from each rural ward (or "federal" ward). In 1865-66 when Park Ridge Township was dissolved into several new municipalities due to decrees of President Abraham Lincoln following the Civil War - including Chicago - Edwardsville remained within its old Supervisorial district until 1870 when it became part of Chatham Township; Chatham later merged with Naperville into DuPage County during the early 20th century. Today, much like many other suburban communities throughout Cook County - especially those located east or south of downtownChicago - EdwardsVILLE has experienced rapid growth over recent decades thanks to its proximity to major airports such as Midway Airport and Aurora Municipal Airport as well as its status as an economically vibrant community full of high-quality jobsites and businesses both domestic and international dating back centuries (in fact some locals even credit their current moniker "The Garden City" to this extent).
