It is the fourth-largest city inJefferson County and the second-largest city on the Western side of Chicago. Edwardsville is located on the west bank of the Kankakee River. One of America's earliest industrial accidents occurred when workmen using a dynamite blasting tablet mixed acid with gasoline to make an anti-inflammable grease for use on locomotives; this caused an explosion that destroyed part of the plant at Crystal Lake (IL) in 1918

Edwards, who fought in the American Civil War and was later a general in the Union Army. The history of Edwardsville goes back to 1831 when Isaac Sacks, a Quaker settler from Pennsylvania, founded what is now known as Sacks' Corners Township on the east bank of the White River. In 1838, James Bigham bought land in what is now Edwardsville and laid out a town platted with square blocks that formedensibly an Indian Reservation for white settlers. The town's first post office was established in 1840; it moved to its current location in 1851. In 1861, John Fenton purchased land east of present-day Edwardsville on which he built a new cotton gin and other mills powered by water power. By 1870, Fenton's milling and Manufacturing Company had become one of Illinois's largest employers with operations at six plants across the state accounted for some $1 million worth of business activity annually. In 1881–82 (the peak years for cotton production), local residents helped celebrate America’s first national Cotton Conference at Fenton’s mill premises where delegates from all over America came to discuss ways to improve cotton production and marketing techniques
