When it was completed in 1839, Edwardsville became the first small town in Illinois. Its growth continued as other settlers arrived until by 1860 there were over 1,000 people living in Davidstown. That same year, Edwardsville became the county seat ofIllini County after being selected by commissioners from neighboring counties as an alternative to Springfield due to its proximity to water resources and its potential for growth. In 1870, when Illinois become a state, Davidstown became one of its first villages and soon developed into a busy commercial center with sawmills and flour mills dotting the landscape. In 1916, during World War I,Davidstown played host to one of America's largest air-raids against German targets when more than 30 bombers came through the area on their bombing run into Berlin; many homes were destroyed or damaged during this raid which helped convince Congress to create withinIllinoisthe Air Force on November 8th Thank you very much!
