Edwardsville, Illinois is a town located in Kendall County, Illinois. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. Edwardsville is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by the towns of Oak Lawn to the north, West View to the east, and Streamwood to the south. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Kendall County were French traders and missionaries who encountered Native Americans while travelling through Central Illinois in 1671-72. Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette explored this area in 1679 and named it for Edward Crawford, 4th Baron Halifax (1624-1710), one of England's leading merchants and investors during the colonial period. In 1809 Edwardsville became a village when its citizens petitioned for incorporation as a town under the name of "Village of Dixon." On May 12, 1836, Township was organized out of portions of Village with a population of 2,362. On November 3rd 1865 Edwardsville became an inevitable part of the newly formed Chicago Metropolitan Area when all but two villages within Kendall County were annexed into that region. Today Edwardsville has a total population over 11,000 residents making it one of Chicagoland's most populous communities. Edwardsville, Illinois is a small town located in the southern half of Cook County, Illinois. It is bordered by Aurora to the north, Carbondale to the east, and unincorporated areas of Cook County to the south. The population was 9,644 as of the 2010 census. Edwardsville is one of three towns in Cook County that are considered "majority-minority" communities: white (87%) and black (13%) make up over 60% of its population. Edwardsville's history dates back to 1836 when General James K. Polk established a military post here after his successful march through central Illinois against Mexico for independence from Spain. The town was named for Captain John Edwards who served as aide-de-camp to General Polk during this time. The first businesses in Edwardsville were lumberyards and sawmills which operated until about 1840. In 1851, Jno Henson founded the hosiery store at 4th Street and Elmira Avenue which became one of the town's most important businesses until it closed in 1984. A new store was built at 301 Wabash Avenue in 1957 and remained active until it went out of business in 2001; however, it still remains an important part of Edwardsville history. In1964, Edward Schieffer opened a grocery store on Courthouse Square which became one of the town's most popular stores until it closed in 1984 also; however, it still remains an important part of Edwardsville history. In 1980s and 1990s groceries such as Kroger and Safeway were opened up shop throughout the community making Edwardsville into a more diverse place with more than just groceries being sold there; however these stores have all since closed down or moved away from Edwardsville altogether. One major event that took place in Edwardsville during this time was when African American students at nearby Carbondale High School achieved national attention when they successfully won passage through their school's integration program known as "The White Knights." This event helped spur interest among many residents withintown towards embarking on their own local integration programs beginning around 1970s while also providing some much needed economic stability for many residents during this time period A large redevelopment project called Kingman Village began taking shape across downtown Carbondale starting around 1986 with plans call for over 1 million square feet (1007 m²) OF new commercial space including approximately 150 job locations However due to funding shortages later that decade Kingsbridge Plazaadium/Arts Complex development never occurred due largely to lacklustre traffic projections made by developers . In early 2000s efforts started underway by Mayor Tom Barrett aimed at revitalizing downtown via art installations/public events/etc.; however these eventually stalled out due lacklustre financial backing In recent years there has been some effort underway by local officials looking towards developing industrial land adjacent to I-235 between State Route 63rd Street & State Route 64th Street near Eldridge Mall into an agricultural production area geared towards growing produce EDWARDSVILLE HISTORY
Edwardsville was founded by Daniel Edwards in 1827. The town was named after General David Edwards, who served during the American Revolution. The first store opened in 1828 and the first post office was established in 1830. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of around 100 residents. In 1839, the first school was built and the first church was erected in 1840. By 1865, Edwardsville had become a large town with a population of over 1,000 people. After the Civil War, Edwardsville experienced growth as businesses came to town to continue operations and new homes were built. In 1907, the city fathers decided to change its name to Chicago because of its growing size and importance in the Midwest economy. By 1920, Chicago had outgrown Edwardsville and it became an insignificant rural community once again. However, due to its proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Chicago and Detroit, Edwardsville has continued to be an important community throughout its history
