Edwardsville, Illinois is a town in Ogle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Edwardsville was founded in 1837 by George Edwards and named for him. The first gun barrels were made in Edwardsville quite possibly as early as 1836 when a man by the name of David Fenton made barrel hoops fromod-willow wood. Barrels were then put together with a hanger on one end and glued to a post or stock with pitch or tar. By 1839 there were two stores in town doing business under the name "Guns & Arms". In 1840 George Witherspoon started making barrels for John Farnam at his store across the street from G&A's location. In 1841 G&A bought out Witherspoon's share and continued to make barrels building an addition to their store that still stands today (Witherspoon Hall). In 1847 John Pritzker started his own sawmill in nearby Carbondale and began producing barrel hoops with his new machinery which he called "Pritzker Barrels". soon other businesses followed suit like J & M Whipple who produced wagons filled with barrel hoops on the premises of their next shop across the road from Pritzker's mill (Fenway Park). By 1861 all of Carbondale had become involved in this activity with over 20 businesses manufacturing barrel hoops including four factories run by James McNaught (later owner of McNaught Bazaar), Nelsons Furniture, Farrells Meat Market, Abelards Shoe Store, etc., all located within 5 blocks of each other on Armour Avenue between State Street and Randolph Road. This period can be seen as one during whichbargain basement production became common place for small businessmen throughout America due to technological advances such as interchangeable parts available at low prices through mail orderaces like Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward

In recent years, Edwardsville has seen strong economic development thanks to its location within easy reach of both Chicago andIndiana University-Normal campuses; its large number of high-end homes; and its close relationship with Carbondale-Munster County governmentality. Today, Edwardsville remains a vibrant community engaged with its citizens and businesses alike.
