Edwardsville, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Edwardsville was founded in 1837 by Captain James S. Edwards and his wife Judith Wigglesworth Edwards. The town was named after Colonel Samuel Edwards who had purchased the land from the Chippewa Indians in 1813. The original post office was established in 1839, and the first store opened in 1840. In 1854, the first school district was organized in Edwardsville. In 1886, there were 10 businesses operating in the town, including three banks and six grocery stores. By 1912, only two businesses remained open in Edwardsville; one hotel and one restaurant. However, since then new businesses have sprung up all over central Illinois as technology advances and more people move to larger cities for work or pleasure reasons. Edwardsville has experienced many changes throughout its history: it became a center of heavy industry during World War II; it saw a rapid expansion of suburban development during the late 1960s and early 1970s; and finally it has been struggling to keep pace with changing social trends over recent years which have resulted in a decline in Population growth rate (from 5% between 2000-2010 to 1% between 2011-2020). Despite these challenges though, Edwardsville remains an important community within Kane County with strong ties to education and culture that continue to grow even as its residents experience demographic shifts elsewhere within their county without necessarily experiencing any long term negative consequences
