Edwardsville was founded by free African Americans who had emigrated from South Carolina in 1847. The town's first post office was established on July 1, 1851. Edwardsville grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, which facilitated trade with nearby towns such as Joliet and Rockford. In 1886, Edwardsville became one of seventeen towns in Cook County to be designated a "Near-by Town" for non-white residents; this designation allowed white people living in other parts of the county to visit their black neighbors without having to leave their homes. A local agricultural community developed around Edwardsville after World War II: corn, soybeans, rice and cotton were all grown here until the mid-2000s. Afterward, Edwardsville became a bedroom community for Chicagoans looking for affordable housing; however, it has been slowly revived by efforts such as initiatives likethe Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s We Are All Change campaign and a rebranding effort that began in 2016 that focuses on economic development opportunities and education within the town’s borders The current mayor of Edwardsville is Eddie Johnson

The community was founded by John Edwards in 1864 as a post office on the banks of the White River. The village that developed around Edwardsville was named after John Edwards' father, also named John Edwards. John Edwards served as a member of the Illinois State Senate from 1879 to 1886 and as Mayor of Chicago from 1889 to 1893. He died in 1902 at age 98 years old and was buried at Fairview Cemetery near his home town of Edwardsville. On February 20, 1907, he was married to Emma Willard and they had two children: Sarah Jane (1893-1978) and John Prentice (1900-1987). In memory of their father, the city renamed its main street after him – John Prentice Boulevard
