Fort Edward served as the county courthouse from 1833 until 1860 when it moved to Springfield Township. In 1865, when Kane County was created, Edwardsville became its newest township and remained so until 1970 when it merged with Knox County to form current day Illinois suburbs of Chicago Heights, Wheaton Hills, Lemont Park etcetera

In 1912 Mayor O'Brien appointed Edward J. Smith as City Manager giving Smith control over all public services within the city limits including police and fire departments; this gave new life to downtown Edwardsville which had been dormant for many years In 1916Normal County was created from parts of Putnam and Cook Counties On January 1st 1917 Edward J. Smith resigned from his position as City Manager effective February 15th due to health reasons In 1920 Mayor Bliss appointed Wm Ransom Askew to succeed him In 1923 Mayor Askewappointed Clarence Davenport as City Attorney giving Davenport responsibility for law enforcement within the city limits
Edwardsville was founded in 1834 by James Edwards and his wife Catharine. The town was named after General George Edwards, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first Postoffice opened in 1836. In 1839, the town had a population of just under 100 people. By 1860, the population had increased to 1,500 people and the town became a courthouse seat. The Edwardsville Railroad was built through the town in 1862 and it became a main transportation artery for the area. The townsite also grew into an agricultural center with crops such as wheat, corn, soybeans and potatoes being grown. In 1911, Edwardsville received its own city government which lasted until 1975 when it merged with nearby Carbondale to form Carbondale-Edwardsville City.Today, Edwardsville is home to several restaurants including Angelo's Pizza and Fuzzy's Burger Shop
