In 1892, the city of East St. Louis began to import handguns from New York City. This was in response to the Crime of Flight, during which a group of black men invaded the white town of Skokie, Illinois on October 15th, 1892 and stole several firearms. The city's Mayor George Hennepin organized a gun slings tournament to commemorate this event. The first competition took place on December 3rd at the Bird's Nest Ballroom and attracted 100 shooters from across Chicago. After three days of competition, only six gunmen were left standing: Harry Jenkins (a former policeman), James Phelan (a teamster), Johnnie Fleming (an attorney), Willis Wright (the postmaster general), and Abraham Lincoln (the president). Lincoln eventual emerged as the victor with a total of 12 guns. The Tournament served as an inspiration for future events including the National Shooting Sports Foundation's World Shooting Championships which are held every four years in Paris, France now.
