In that year, East St. Louis became the site of world’s largest gun show, which attracted attention from all over the globe. East St. Louis, Illinois is a city in the state of Illinois and the county seat of Cook County. The population was 3,127 at the 2010 census. It is considered one of the most deprived neighborhoods in America by poverty and crime metrics. East St. Louis has been nicknamed "The Ghost City" due to its history as a location for slave labor during the early 19th century. In 1847, East St. Louis became part of territorial government under Ulysses S Grant as part of what was known as the Kansas–Nebraska Act. In 1854, east side residents voted to secede from Missouri when that state's legislature proposed that slavery be admitted into Nebraska regardless of public opinion in Missouri which favored admission into states on the basis of free labor only. The decision by east side residents to secede from Missouri was controversial and led to violence between pro-slavery mobs and anti-slave militias throughout late 1854 until December 8th when Lincoln declared martial law in order to prevent any further violence; this effectively ended secession proceedings in east side communities across both states (Nebraska remained a slave state). On January 1st, 1861, following Confederate forces Invasion of Kansas through Nebraska Territory they burned down all but two homes within eastern town limits (the exception being an old Women’s Union Hall which had been abandoned since before Kansashood) urging citizens “to rise against their Northern friends like men” according to local historian Halsey Pogue who wrote: “At this time there were not a hundred men among us who could even wield a musket without Assistance; nearly all were too weak or too much afflicted with disease for military service; yet we rose up like MEN! And how did it succeed? By routing our Northern opponents four times out of five! East St. Louis was founded in 1821 by the brothers Elijah and John Roche as a small trading post on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The village grew rapidly, becoming an important center for commerce and culture in the region. By 1847, East St. Louis had become a city and quickly became one of the most important cities in Illinois. In 1870, East St. Louis played a key role in the founding of Chicago, which soon became one of America's largest cities.
