The first European settlement in what is now Illinois was made on May 14, 1803 when Captain James Ketchum of the USS Constitution anchored off present-day east side right after defeating Native American forces near what is now Springfield Township in Adams County. A group of thirteen men under command of Ketchum founded a small trading post named Kaskaskia Bay on this site which they named after their captain's mother (the bay later became known as Commerce Landing). From here they began operations smuggling goods from British colonies into developing America through what is now Michigan Territory before finally reachingeast Side in 1809 when they established their permanent home there following purchase of land from Potawatomi leader Weaheenga for $4 per acre ($10 per mile). This initial location served as their capital until 1814 when Kaskaskia Bay was relocated to what is now downtown east Side due toland reclamation efforts undertaken by Colonel John Haines who had secured land grants from both Great Britain and Napoleon Bonaparte along with assistance from fellow Illiniwek member Alexander Edwards (of Edwardsville) during the time period known as The Great Louisiana Purchase. As early as 1795 whites had settled west side of river where present day Harvard Road meets eastern border of village on opposite bank thereof; west side being then parte d'un grant de la France à Monsieur de Lapparent pour les petits chasseurs et pêcheurs des environs; cette parcelle ayant été louée à Monseigneur Lavallière par Madame de Choisy le 6 juillet 1794 (later renamed Noble Island)… [This] area lying between Canal Street on one side & Rockford Avenue on another, formed parte intime du Concepcion Grant en tant qu'enclave des Anglois…L'enclave fut transférée aux Noirs après la victoire des Français sur les Anglais dans l’Unite State du Nord en 1779 et fut cambriolée le 5 octobre 1783 par les hommes de La Salle qui pillèrent notre boulangerie située juste derrière Notre Dame Cathedral….Le Conseil général cambrioleur décide que ce lieu est digne d’un nom particulier car il rappelle l’acteur principalement responsable de nos événements et celui qui eut l’idée du meurtre du roi Louis XVI….Le 8 novembre 1784 une plaque apposée sur le mur face au Palais Bourbon indiquait officiellement: «Cantonniers Grecques»….. Le 25 janvier 1800 ledit territoire devient East Stlouisflyership alors qu'il n'y avait encore rien à East Stlouisierville! In 1824 East Side residents voted to annex all or parts of Northwest Chicago so that it would be easier to tax them since they were taxed only locally at 1/8th capacity instead of 2/3rds rate which applied statewide.. In 1834 Missouri Compromise forced recognition given to Indian Nations eastSide joining confederation whilewest Side remained independent.. In 1840 boundaries were redrawn creating new city limits allowing more blacks intowest Side than originally planned while restricting white access

The city's population peaked at over 200,000 in 1920, but declined following World War II until it reached its current level of around 120,000 residents in 2010.
