In recent years there has been an increase in light industry with properties such as FirstMerit Bank Tower being built along one side of downtown while property values have increased along Jackson Boulevard across from Interstate 55 which provides easy access to both business districts

East St. Louis, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and is the county seat of Kane County. The population was 67,569 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in Kane County after Chicago. It was founded by German farmers in 1847 on what is now the eastern edge of present-day St. Louis County, about two miles (3 km) east of the current downtown area. The first settlers arrived from Germany and Bavaria and were followed by other European immigrants during the mid-19th century as railroads penetrated this fertile region. By 1870, East St.Louis had become an important center for cotton production and integration into American culture; its nickname "The Cotton Capital of America" was made official by Congress in 1887 with passage of The Cotton Act, which authorized federal assistance to support cotton farming throughout the country. In 1907–08, East St.Louis became one of few cities to experience a complete social revolution when Mayor John Pritzker ordered all public toilets open to allow more people access to clean water without having to go outside for it; this event is generally considered to be one of the most pivotal moments in its history (See: East StLouis vs.) In 1925–26, Mayor Charles Wolk developed plans for a new downtown that would include commercial and cultural attractions as well as housing developments for workers who would help improve agricultural yields around town; these projects were eventually realized through collaborations between various civic groups and private investors over several years culminating with Wolk's construction award in 1933/34 (See: Downtown Development Plan). During World War II, East StLouis played a leading role in providing food and munitions supplies to allied forces stationed within Missouri and Illinois; its citizens also volunteered their time and resources towards war efforts at home or out west where they helped erect military installations such as Fort Snelling on University Avenue near present day Fenton Park before finally returning home after hostilities ended in 1945 (See: War Memorials). Afterward, many residents returned to their formerly bucolic lifestyle while some continued living away from town until recently when annexation into West Side Chicago caused a increase in population density along I-64 corridor which has led to increased traffic problems along much ofeast side louisiana

Today, East St. Louis is home to a number of important cultural institutions, including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the DePauw University Museum of Art.
