East St. Louis, Illinois is a city in the East St. Louis metropolitan area in southern Illinois. The population was 127,827 as of the 2010 census. The east side of town is home to the easternmost courthouse in Illinois and one of the few remaining examples of a Gothic Revival style building from this time period. The city's name comes from Saint Louis, Missouri, which was founded by French colonists in 1763 and named for King Charles III of Spain. English settlers moved into what is now East St.Louis after they were forced out of their original homes by Native Americans during the Seven Years' War (1754-1767). They called their new settlement "Eastville" after their leader, General David Morgan (1684-1748), who had led an army against the Shawnee people near what is now West Side Highway and Adams Boulevard. In 1812, when Illinois became a United States territory, East St.Louis was made part of it and became known as "St. Clair County". In 1834, following Indian Creek Massacre at Black Hawk Prairie where 7 people were killed and over 20 captured by Indians while raiding Fort Moultrie on the Mississippi River, Governor Andrew Johnson ordered that all Indian tribes must be removed from most of Iowa Territory or face expulsion; this order caused great outrage throughout Illinois because not only did it violate treaties with several Native American nations but also violated federal law which stipulated that citizens could not be coerced into leaving their ancestral lands without due process! In 1835–36 African Americans working on ranches near present-day Orchard Park petitioned for land to be set aside specifically for them; however, no action was taken until 1840 when Senator Richard Yates introduced legislation proposing that black residents within five miles of any white person should have receive two acres per head regardless of gender or race – this bill passed both houses but was vetoed by President James Kapp! In 1841 Judge Robert Hinkle granted Negroes permission to vote in local township elections but these rights were revoked soon afterwards because whites felt they would gained an unfair advantage over blacks! Inevitably open racism reigned through muchofthe remainder Of America during these years culminating with Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 which finally ended slavery across all US territories! East St. Louis experienced significant growth during World War II as an important manufacturing center for munitions and aircraft parts production; however, today most East St. Louis residents are employed within Kane County or within rural areas outside of the city limits. The first Europeans to explore what would become East St. Louis were Frenchmen Jacques Marquette and Jean Nicolet in 1673 and 1679, respectively; their reports suggest a village had been established near present-day downtown east side by then but no substantive evidence exists to support this claim beyond some speculative assumptions about early settler behavior given their lack of knowledge about Indian activity in that area at that time (e.g., they might have mistaken Indian villages for European settlements). On July 4, 1847, German settlers named Friedrich August Siebold arrived at Kankakee Rapids with three boats to establish what would become known as "East St." Louis Township on those same rapids; he soon realized there were much more people living along the river than he could possibly accommodate so he founded a second settlement nearby called "West Point" which quickly grew into what is now known as White Flint Township on land donated by Captain John Floyd (1795-1850) after his contract with US President George Washington ended in February 1796 due to Floyd's discovery of Lake Michigan grants west of present day Chicago including land herein now included in East SaintLouis Township (as well as other tracts located between Kankakee Rapids and White Flint). In 1868, following Purchased from France by Chicago Mayor Richard Menthon and Commissioner David Dixon Sr., East Stolf City Proper was organized out of portions of West Point Township northward extending east 3 rods beyond First Street cornering Main Street & Ohio Avenue – becoming one municipality with a population over 12000! A year later on November 1st 1870 when all municipalities combined under Mayor James Shields having jurisdiction over all wards therein under charter granted December 5th 1870 pursuant to Act No 24 Geo III c 235 passed January 2nd 1871 – business activities commenced within newly formed municipality boundaries with Streets & Alleys freshly laid outgridiron sidewalks surfaced arterially [circa 1860] just like streets hereabouts today! As business boomed across late 1800s Cook County & eastern suburbs such as Evanston (& many others) suburban real estate prices continued soaring both inside & outside cities/townships often drove tax rates up thereby exacerbating need for services/jobs even higher priced neighborhoods couldn't keep up with increasing demand!!!
