East Peoria was founded by pioneers from Ohio in 1836 as an agricultural community on land that had been donated to them by General James K. Polk. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s due tothe opening of new railroads, increased immigration from Russia and other parts of Europe, and the growth of cotton plantations in central Illinois. The American Civil War began here on April 12, 1861 when Confederate troops attacked a Union military detachment near East Peoria while supplies were being transported through town. The attack led to total destruction of most of East Peoria’s buildings; only two structures still remain standing today including City Hall (now African American Museum) and jail (now First United Methodist Church). On May 3rd 1865 Union forces burned down East Peoria’s entire downtown for what was then known as “the greatest publicburning ever done by any Governmental authority”
East Peoria, Illinois was founded on November 3, 1809 by James H. Easton and his wife Catherine. The town grew rapidly due to the timber trade and its location near the confluence of the Kankakee and Chicago Rivers made it a desirable place to live. Easton died in 1828 and his widow continued to grow the town until her death in 1853. In 1865, East Peoria became a city when it was merged with West Peoria.
