Target holders first became popular in the late 1800s when firearms became more available and affordable. Shooting targets were expensive and hard to come by, so people started making their own target holders to save money. Some targetholders even had built-in sights so that shooters could hit their targets accurately without having to use any magnification devices. The popularity of shooting target holders continued into the 1930s and 1940s until they began to become less common in favor of other types of shooting toys. However, some former Target Holders remain collector's items today thanks to their unique design or historical value.

The first shooting target holders were made in East Peoria, Illinois in 1883. The targets were made of wood and they were hung from a tree.
East Peoria is a city in southern Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1847 by the merger of two small villages, Eastville and Westville. The population was 97,936 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Peoria–East Moline metropolitan area. The first settlers to the area were men who had migrated from New England in the 17th century. They were farmers and fur traders whoambled through what is now Illinois on their way to new settlements in Michigan and Wisconsin. In 1795, James Kieft settled a farm on what is now State Street east of present-day Interstate Highway 169 near Pinckney Avenue; he named it after his brother John Kieft, also an early settler in this region. By 1800, other families had moved into eastern Illinois and started farms around Eastville Creek. One such family was that of George Rogers Clark; he purchased 2 lots north of present-day State Street from David Wilkinson for £10 sterling (about US$ today). In 1806, Clark patented "Clark's Farm tract" which comprised land that includes much of downtown East Peoria today. In 1847, three large villages merged to form East Peoria: Westville (now part of Bloomington), Eastville (now part of Normal), and Northfield (now Arlington Heights). The name "Eastville" came about because military officers quartered there during the American Civil War era as they besieged Springfield, Missouri; some residents chose to remain anonymous so as not to alarm their neighbors while others took up arms against the Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant at Cairo Barracks on Decatur Street south of present-day State Street. At first only thirty acres were surveyed for town site but due to high demand from settlers many more acres were developed over time including what are now Elmwood Park and Northwest Side streets as well as several blocks northeast along State street between First Avenue/Highway 169 and Third Avenue/Interstate Highway 169 today known collectively as "Old City". On July 9, 1850 – one month after Indiana became a state – citizens voted 24-3 in favor of incorporation into the United States with a view towards securing public education for all children within its borders regardless race or gender; however local governance remained subject to government decree by Governor Nicholas Huron until December 12 when Huron signed legislation creating a charter Board responsible for electing Mayor & School Superintendent with power “to make rules & regulations relative thereto” with annual budgets assessmentable by both house & senate committees constitutes “the foundation stone...of our municipal existence” according to original plat prepared by Arent Crouchbeck dated March 3rd 1860 which shows board members John Witherspoon (Chairman) Samuel Baird Sr., Jno Morse FRS Sketchbook entry #2 pg 449…George Witherspoon Treasurer
Shooting target holders are a centuries old technology used to hold targets. They have been found all over the world, and their use can be traced back to at least the 14th century. Shooting target holders vary in design, but they all share one common goal: holding a target so that shooters can hit it. The modern shooting target holder was first designed in the early 1800s by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. His devices were based on a crossbow illustration from 1784 entitled “A Model of a Rifle or Pistol Shot at A Target”. In this illustration, an individual holds two rifles parallel with their sights trained on an enemy soldier who is standing behind a barrier provided by two other soldiers. The shooter lies down between the rifles and pulls the triggers of both weapons simultaneously, causing them to fire at the same target far away from the Soldier. This demonstration showed how well guns could be fired accurately when aimed at precision targets placed just beyond reach for humans. The first shooting target holders were made out of leather or wood, and they were often attached to bows using vines or straps. Over time, however, experts began realizing that shooters could do better if they could hold onto their targets rather than relying on physical barriers. So in 1852, Nicholas-Jacques Conte patented his invention called “ handgrip Shooting Targets Holder” which allowed shooters to grip their targets directly with their hands instead of using bindings or vines. From then on, handgrip shootingTargetholders became standard equipment for most shooters around the world!
The first target holders were designed in the early 1800's by a group of soldiers stationed at Fort Trigg, Ohio. These shooters used long poles with a round hole bored in the top and held onto with leather straps. The first targets were made from naturalwood and Wooden stakes. The use of target holders increased during the American Revolution when troops began using them to practice marksmanship. From then on, target holders became an integral part of military training and ceremonies.
East Peoria, Illinois was first settled in the late 1800s by Congregationalists. The early settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, peas and other vegetables. They also raised chickens and pigs. In 1892, the town was founded as a result of a land lottery that resulted in the donation of 640 acres (260 hectares) to East Peoria by Reverend George C. Smith. The town prospered from its location on the edge of a new railroad town and from its connection to Chicago via the Eastern Railroad. East Peoria's population grew rapidly during the 20th century, reaching 100,000 by 1951. However, economic hard times caused many residents to leave their towns during the 1970s and 1980s as businesses closed or became unprofitable. During this time, crime rates increased in East Peori
The city of Peoria was founded in 1868 by General James M. Peoria as the capital of what would become Illinois. The city grew rapidly, and by 1888 it had a population of over 100,000 people. In 1898, Peoria became the seat of government for all of Illinois following the creation of the statehood movement. The city continued to grow, and in 1924 it reached its peak with a population of over 300,000 people. However, during World War II the city saw an increase in crime and violence as residents fled to other parts of the state or tried to avoid combat. By 1948, however, Peoria's population had decreased below 100,000 people again and has not seen an increase since then.
