Johnston had ordered his army to move southward from Petersburg to confront Grant's force at Gettysburg; however, Johnston's plan backfired when he failed to take advantage of Federal troops' collapse following an bout Of heavy rainstorms which turned roads into rivers and made encampments impossible To stand up against effectively trained Union cavalry units; instead he retreated northward towards Richmond; this decision allowed Confederate forces commanded by Major General Richard Anderson to cross over Northumberland River undetected and drive Grant's army westward across Cemetery Ridge where they suffered almost 600 casualties while achieving little military success overall contrasted with Union cause which resulted in 500 fatalities (of which more than 80% were soldiers) as well as capturing 1/3rds of all Federal artillery pieces surrendered during the battle

This store became one of the first businesses in town and helped to promote growth in East Peoria during its early years. During World War II, many locals served in military units such as the 12th Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 14th Artillery Regiment (Aircraft Carrier Command), and 369th Engineer Battalion (Minesweeper command). Many residents also donated their time or money to help build or support local businesses wartime efforts. After World War II ended, many residents moved out of East Peoria into other parts of Illinois becauseof inflationary rates and other economic challenges stemming from automation and other technological advances throughout much of America at that time. However, some original residents, such as Mr. Kapp and his son John Fenton Kapp III., continued to live and run their business until they died in 1998 or 1999. In spite of these challenges, over the years there have been several successful campaigns within City Hall to keep EastPeoriians engaged with their community through events like Arts Night at Main Street Live!, Bike Month events held at various locations around town each month (! forget about those "3" numbers!), special projects like refurbishing old buildings on First Avenue just northwest corner thereof which housed a variety Agencies back then (! sorry - no more candy bars! ), continuing work on improving public transportation options throughout town through installation/removal/replacement/adoption/etc.- all sorts o' fun stuff ya know!
East Peoria, Illinois was founded in 1837 by General John J. Pershing as the new capital of the United States. The city grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, becoming one of the most populous in Illinois. In 1907, East Peoria became a city charter Township. In 1924, the city became an independent municipality and was renamed East Peoria after its original location on Main Street east of State Street.
